Trip report to Navajo Lake in Colorado

That's just incredible to me. I can't wait to have my own. Thanks for not being offended by my questions. I've pulled around 3000 pounds before and quite frankly was disappointed in the performance of the 5.4. It's just hard to comprehend that there is that much difference but I'm a believer in Ford and you as well.

Thanks!

Not a problem. I have towed (5,000lbs) with the Expedition with 5.4 up I-70 to the Eisenhower tunnels at 10k feet or so. This is steep run, but it is quite long and fairly straight. So you can keep the momentum up, unless someone gets in your way. The 5.4 did pretty good, I would keep about 30 mph, some sections I might hit 40 mph or so. I will love to test the F150 up this mountain with the 7,000 load sometime...

The Wolf creek pass is all major hill, with no straight sections, just major turns. So an engine really can't catch a breath, it just has to suck air and power up the pass.

This is why I was so impressed with the power of the 3.5 EB. As you can see, I also have the Fusion 1.6 EB for the last 2 years, no issues and very impressive power here too. So far, I am loving both of my EB motors...

Thanks for that report, that truck sounds awesome. I can attest for the sheer amazing factor of Wolf Creek Pass. I vacationed all over Colorado in my Expedition and my motorcycle. The first time I went west over Wolf Creek Pass I was stunned. Like you said, no straight stretches and wicked steep, both sides. Of course I was breathtaken by the scenery and the views, then after several passes on it on my motorcycle which ate the pass alive like a hungry animal, I loaded up the expedition, hitched the trailer up with the bike on it and locked it in 2nd gear and putted up the mountain....what fabulous memories I'll never forget.

So for you EB loaded up like that to tear it up that must be one amazing machine.

Amen, B&B. Yes, it is a major pass for anyone towing a heavy load. Actually, even empty you know you are climbing a good size mountain.

I don't know if anyone remembers the old CW McCall song (Wolf Creek Pass), but I loved it as a kid, it was one of my favorite songs. Did not believe it until I towed the boat down the mountain....

You mean the one that says "a thousand cubes in a nineteen-forty-eight Peterbilt screamed to life"? Never heard of it.

Yes, it is a bit of a climb. I remember pulling a travel trailer over it with our new '69 Super Bee and using lots of the secondaries on that Holley. Then we started down and I was glad it had the 11" brakes, all drum, as we used a lot of them.

But I wouldn't hesitate to pull our 23' Sea Ray over it with Big Blue. The combo of the 3.5 EB and electric trailer brakes wouldn't be stressed. What a difference 45 years, and the right vehicle, makes.

Thanks for the write up. It's great to hear how these engines perform. I feel more and more confident in the choice of the 3.5 EB. I, however, have not yet had the chance to tow with mine, since I only just brought her this past Monday.

Very welcome, enjoy the new truck!! I had no choice, I had to hook my boat up and tow it 130 miles, the 2nd day after I picked up my new truck. I was just really easy on it, it did not seem to effect the engine at all. So far it has logged 2300 miles just towing my boat, putting on another 300 miles this weekend. Summer is so fun....

Pretty nice real world review. I agree that the Eco is a fantastic tow motor, and way overpowered my last 2 5.4's (which towed my TT's respectably).

Great write up, thanks. I previously owned a 2005 Expy EB 5.4L, 3.73 and tow pkg. w/max tow capacity of 8900#. I haul an enclosed trailer, car and gear weighing about 8K. The Expy has done a good job for the past 3 years of ownership, but it struggled on some trips. I knew eventually I was gonna have to upgrade, thinking probably to a F250. Our trip to Bowling Green, KY to race at the new NCM in July, was the deciding factor. Pretty hilly between Cincinnati and BG and the Expy really struggled, coming and going. Everything I've heard from new F150 owners was positive with many of those owners also hauling 8K trailers. I'm anxiously waiting for Oct, when I get to test the new 150's towing ability, hauling the trailer & car to the season finale at Mid Ohio. From your write up, the trip should be a breeze for the 150.

I live in flat florida. My 07 5.4 struggled to pull my 22' center console (5000#). I had the 2.7 EB but had to return the truck due to damage. I now have a 15 xlt fx4 with the 5.0. Not a whole lot of information or videos with this combo. I have yet to tow with it but I feel a big difference just driving around town.
