Tranny Overheating

I have a few questions. The other day I was driving through Dallas pulling my boat. Needless to say, I hit bumper to bumper traffic for about an hour. When I finally made it to the lake, about 120 miles from home, I noticed what looked like a misting on my tailgate and boat trailer. Didn't really think too much about it until I was about to head home at the end of the weekend. Checked my tranny fluid and it was low.
Added fluid to it. I'm assuming the "misting" was from my tranny overheating and venting.
Now the questions: is my assumption correct? If so, was it caused by the high temp outside and the traffic? How can I help this to not happen again?
I know high tranny temps are what kills them.
Just looking for some advise and guidance.

I would add a trans temp gauge. Also check for fuel leaks. When my fuel pump was leaking it would do the same thing.

I know that could be the problem but it might be caused by something else too. I'd get a scan guage of some sort (I use Torque Pro) and monitor your temps.
Best way to keep the trans cool is an upgraded cooler. The stock one is dinky.

I know when they get hot, the convertor seals like to start leaking. I would check up by there for wetness.

Trans temp gauge is a great idea. Nothing like some peace of mind.

I did check for fuel leaks, didn't find any. I will look into the gauge. Also, very interested in upgrading to cooler.
Thanks for the input.

With my 6.0 32 row trans cooler it never got hot. Glad it didn't get burned up because its going on the 'stock' replacement Blue Ox before the trip to AZ.

I'm a nervous Nellie. Rubber worries me so I try to limit it. I need to redoo the lines behind the rad. the big thing is to Mount and insulate the steel tho as you know.

I found a 40,000 GVW cooler. Is this overkill? It is a tru-cool.

That is what I have. Very popular mod. I had issues with overheating I believe for as long as I have had mine. I never had a gauge until recently...now I regret not upgrading years ago.

I've been told not to run too cool as well . Just like the motor , the trans needs to get hot enough to boil off any moisture .

That TruCool should be more than fine. It could also be possible the trans was overfilled and dumped some fluid. Ask me how I know.

How do you know that Byron?, JK.

I do know my 6.0 is overkill but it pulls hard (used too ) 90% of the time so I don't worry about any condensation.
