firewall pad

For those who have replaced your firewall pad what are you using? I am considering getting one for my 51 since I normally use them, but all I have seen online is an ABS plastic part that is almost $200 without shipping.

I put carpet padding (automotive type, not foam) on the firewall and covered it with pond liner. Total cost about $40. It's hard to find totally black pond liner, apparently they use recycled materials, but it's out there. I think it was 40 mil thick. Easy to clean.

Good idea, I may even have similar materials already in stock, plus I dont want the factory punch outs since I welded up all the stock firewall holes.

anyone use the ABS one? Just curious what it looks like and why they would make it out of ABS instead of original style materials. Most muscle cars I have dealt with had new pads available for not much money.

The original was corrugated cardboard with asphalt-impregnated paper cover. No way to fold it to ship, and talk about a fire hazard... When I removed mine, I found that wherever there was a blank hole in the firewall, oil/grease had come thru and wicked into the material. Quite a mess.

I used the one sold by Quiet ride solutions. They custom build each one to your specifications and they fit without modifications.
