HVAC

i'm trying to get my HVAC working but i notice that the little black ball shaped thing on the fender well isn't connected. i understand that this is supposed to be hooked up to the HVAC but how?? does any one have a picture of how it should be. i have an 84 f159 with a 351w with factory AC. the problem that i'm having is that i can't switch the direction of the airflow inside the cab. after i get this fixed then i'll recharge the ac and have ac again in the truck. thanks for anyone that's able to assist.

I can look for a pic later, but a vacuum line usually comes off of the little plastic manifold on the firewall and heads toward the passenger's side hood hinge. Just before getting there it connects to a tee/check valve. One side of the tee goes to the ball. The other side of the tee goes almost straight back, and changes to a small hard plastic line that goes into a grommet that takes it inside the cab.

Here's a pic of Rusty's underwood area. The check valve/tee is at the very top-left of the picture, just to the right of the two heater hoses. The line to the right comes from the manifold on the firewall, but can come from the vacuum tree on the intake manifold. The line coming toward the front goes to my reservoir, which is the can behind the battery. The line going to the rear is the one that connects to the hard plastic line and goes into the cab.

hey thanks that's what i needed i have everything but that one line hooked up & that might be the reason for my vents not switching around in the truck. i gotta get this truck ready to go from a part time driver to a full time driver due to some idiot hitting my expedition last week and totaling it out while it was parked. now somebody is gonna go to a junkyard and get a damn good 5.4L engine with only 144501 miles on it. it just makes me mad everyday!!!

The error in your statement is "a good 5.4L". The new 2.7L Ecoboost has more power and yet better economy.

Good plan, Stan! I love mine, but it (shown in the sig) has the 3.5L EB, not the 2.7. I did that for the same reason as you - so I could take my granddaughter, and her parents, and pull the boat at the same time.

Thumbs up

Gary...I ,too, agree..only with the 2.0 Turbo/EcoBoost. This is in my wife's new Escape AWD. I couldn't believe 248HP from that little engine. First oil change last week..Has a bellypan under the front..with an opening to direct air to the Turbo. No more home oil changes !!

Hmm, I've not looked to see how easy it'll be to change oil in mine.

ok well igot the hose re-connected and the vent still won't change so i'm guessing that the blend door is gonna be the issue here. no i've got to figure out how to get to it and repair it!!!

Is it in Defrost mode? That's the default position w/o vacuum. If it is in Defrost then maybe you still don't have vacuum. I thought you said it worked before the engine swap, so it isn't likely the blend door broke at the same time.

The next place a problem occurs is where the hard plastic line goes through the firewall. Inspect that for breakage. If it looks good, look behind the glove box for a connector of two vacuum hoses. (It may be easier to take the glovebox out to do this.) Pull the connector apart and check for vacuum with the engine running. If no vacuum keep working under the hood. If you have vacuum it may then be the blend door, the control, or the vacuum motor.

If it isn't in Defrost mode, and if you see the motors working, then you have vacuum and there's no reason to check that plug.
