Help hooking up aftermarket speedo on 71 f250 with zf5 swap

Bought my truck about a year ago with no gauges in it at all.

Sucessfully hooked up tach, oil, and temp gauges

Cant figure out how to hookup speedo

Truck has a D9TE-ab block from a town car
has a zf5 5 speed out of a 90's f350 i think

Read somewhere that the trucks with factory zf5's got speedo reading from rear end

My truck has the stock dana 60 from 71 so that wont work?

It doesnt get the reading from the side of the trans?

How to hookup aftermarket speedo?

Thanks Kris

The post-91 trucks had an electronic speedo connected to the rear end no matter what engine/trans, and the pre-92 trucks had the manual speedo from the trans if 2wd or from the t case if 4wd. you'll have to find out what yr truck the trans came from, your kinda out of luck if it's a later trans

Thanks for the reply.

How do I find out exactly what year the zf5 came out of?

Can I look up the serial numbers on the info plate on the side of the trans?

Thanks
Kris

If all else fails, put in a big fat in-your-face tach. Have a buddy with a modern car drive along side and raise his hand when you hit 60, 65, 70...
Mark off the tach with whiteout.
You only care about speedometers in top cruising gear, right?

This won't necessarily be the least expensive route to get a functional speedometer, and other functional in dash gauges but, if you get an F500-up big truck instrument cluster bezel, you can install full instrumentation in it, along with a GPS controlled speedometer.

The GPS speedometer won't require figuring out any drive cables to the speedometer and no wiring a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) to it.

Just an example of a GPS speedometer.

GPS Speedometers > Gauges Only > Revolution

Example of an old Bumpside F600 instrument cluster that the modern gauges can be installed in.

F500-up instrument bezel with Speed Hut gauges. --this bezel from a '73-'79 Dentside big truck.

What year ZF-5speed is it? Got a tag number? I looked in a parts list for a 1990 F350 4X2. It lists a 6 tooth green and a 7 tooth natural color speedo drive gear possible.
