New To Me V-10

Hello again all. I just bought a new to me, used 2010 F-250 V-10 Lariat 4.10 gears, only 46,000 miles. So far I'm really liking it. I just got a custom tune from 5 Star Tuning. 89 Perf/Tow. Traded in a 2010 F-150 5.4liter.

Thx. Unfortunately I have to wait a bit to put the tune on, have to run the gas out more to fill up with 89 octane. How bad does the 4.10 kill the mpg? I thought 3.73 was standard. Oh well, very happy with the low end grunt so far. I hope the custom tune wakes up the truck a little. How often do you replace fuel filter? Thx again for all the input/ help.

Great looking truck! Up here in Alaska the 2008+ model year F250 / F350 that have the V10 rarely hit the lots, and if they do they are gone in a matter of days. I looked for a while to find a 08-10 V10 in XLT / Lariat trims prior to getting my Excursion and never seen one that was not an XL trim that was a slope truck (low miles, TONS of idle time).

The 4.10 gears are very likely improving your mpg over 3.73's, the V10 and gearing is kind of backwards from the common gearing stigma, I've seen and read of many v10's that actually get better mileage with taller gears then the 3.75's. My 06 has 4.10 gears and have on the rare occasion when I'm on a long trip unloaded I can see 14/15 mpg under 70mph.

What position is best for front hubs under normal driving conditions, Auto or Lock?

Auto with auto assuming you don't have any vaccum leaks you can just flip the switch in the cab and not have to get out and lock the hubs. And when not using 4 wheel drive your front axle won't be spinning all the time.

What Mike said, auto. Congrats on low mileage 2010, I also got a 2009 low mileage(46000) 350 V10 last October. Just love the hell out of it. Mind like Twigs, I'm getting 13 going back and forth to work and about 14.5 on a trip. That's cruising at 68 mph, I believe that's about 2050 rpms. Wouldn't trade it for nothing!

Very nice. Hang on to that beauty as you got one of the last years for the pickup V10's!

If you ever find yourself second guessing the truck, just find an open section of road and floor it. You'll smile once again.

* Disclaimer - should you try the above mentioned, it is your fault should you pass a cop at high speed while wearing that huge grin. Ha!

I didn't see where anyone replied to this... IIRC, the fuel filter is supposed to be changed every 25k miles? I may have that confused with the info for my 2v V10 motorhome, but at $15 it's not a big issue to change more often regardless. On that note, I just put a fresh one in my 2008 with ~110k miles, and the first tank of fuel through with the new filter was an honest 1mpg better, hand calculated. Mine was clearly the original filter though, so I don't necessarily think my results are typical... All that said, I'm still only averaging 10.73mpg for the ~6k miles I've owned the truck, so I'm looking for the secrets these guys reporting 13-15mpg are hiding

This reminds me that I probably should change my fuel filter as its original as far as I know 100k . To be perfectly honest my normal driving average is about the same as yours, 10mpg with shorter trips but if I fuel up and drive around 65mph on a longer trip I can get 14/15mpg. I traded up to the 06 F350 v10 from a 94 F150 5.8 and with the same driving they get the same mpg and the v10 will pull anything the F150 could possibly dream of towing with ease even with the F150 thrown on top of the load although I do miss that old truck.

Nice truck!! BTW, 4.10s were standard for the V10 starting in 2005..
