New guy...1969 F100

Hey guys...Ive been entertaining the idea of buying a truck for a couple months and came across this one and jumped on it for what I think was a decent price (maybe im wrong haha). Im a bike guy, have build many old harleys...shovelheads and ironheads...So i know my way around a garage but have never really dealt with cars, and just decided to jump it. Drove 3 hour from pittsburgh to pick this truck up and drive it home knowing I will most likely spend most of the trip on the side of the road, limping home. The truck ran like a champ and blasted 70mph the whole way home with no issues. Im pretty psyched on this truck and very happy it ran without a hiccup. Im not really sure my plans with the truck...I just want a cool little cruiser, that I can maintain and learn on. Going to change plugs and wires, oil change, air filter, and need to rehang an exhaust bracket...but everything else seems relatively alright considering. The only real pressing issue I see is the inner fender apron is pretty shot on both sides where the hood hinges bolt on...any advice on replacing these? buy new? track a set down? Still have a ton of research and a lot to learn but ready for the ride!

Sorry for some of the pictures being sideways not sure how to make them right side up

Comgrats! These rigs are super reliable once running well. Besides the maintenance, I'd put mine up against a brand new truck.

Browse through the forum and you'll find tons of info on things to do to make it better.

Welcome to the FTE Bumpside section. I have a '69 too --F100 short bed Ranger.

The brakes are generally a big problem area on these old trucks so, I would suggest to thoroughly go through and check them.

What engine and transmission does your truck have?

My '69 F100.

Nice truck. Looks like most the ranger pieces are there. If you ever plan on changing those wheels, I would be more than willing to shoot you an offer for those wheel covers. Sometimes going a little further and investing $80 into a complete engine gasket kit isn't a horrible idea. Allows you to tear everything down really well and gives you a better peace of mind knowing all your gaskets are correct / new, bolts are correctly torqued / in good condition, and it gives you a chance to look at the real condition of your engine when you start getting the heads pulled / oil pan pulled. (You will be surprised how much gunk builds up in an oil pan.) Having all the water ports open allows you to flush out any orange and make sure all the water ports are flowing well and lets you check the condition of your valves.

I would recommend making sure your truck runs and stops before investing ANYTHING in anything other than engine and brakes. Its better to have something that drives reliably and doesnt look as good than to have a good looking truck that just sits. These trucks are reliable as it gets once you get to that point. I would highly recommend an electronic ignition as the only times I've ever seen these trucks break down is due to a points / condenser issue. Electronic ignitions just have way to many positive compared to all the negatives when it comes to points / condensers.

You came to a great place to get advise on anything old Ford related.

Good luck with your build!

Thanks for all the welcomes

Running into the first couple of issues... While driving the truck in stop and go traffic the truck will just shut off. It will start back up after a couple cranks and take right off....it happens while driving under 20mph. Not sure if it's some sort of electrical thing....I went into minor panic mode so I don't remember if the radio went too... Although there are some weird wiring issues where the radio will go out, and the dash light will come in and out as I hit bumps.

Or could it be vapor lock? Or a blockage of some sort?

Also, when I start it it cranks and stalls immediately... Do that four or five times and it fires up fine... Not sure if the two are related

C6AZ-1130-G .. 15" Wheel Cover / Reproduced, but it's the wrong one.

Cone is stainless steel, emblem is black/red.

Optional: 1966 Galaxie/LTD & 1966/77 F100 & 1975/77 F150.

Standard equipment on the rear wheels of 1967/77 Bronco's. The front 4WD wheel cover, instead of the emblem, has a red plastic ring for the hub to poke thru.

1966 Galaxie/LTD: There are THREE other versions. One has the cone painted light argent, emblem is black/red (C6AZ-1130-A). This is the one that Carpenter reproduces for F100's & Bronco's.

TWO other Galaxie/LTD versions have an all black emblem, cone is either painted light argent (C6AZ-1130-B) or is stainless (C6AZ-1130-H).

Good lookin truck,Stayxcalm.
I didn't read if you have done any periodic maintenance work. If not, the shut sown thing may be something as simple as Fuel filters or maybe a weak fuel pump. If in fact it has an original type fuel pump, it will have a canister on the bottom that "unscrews ". The options are, replace the fuel filter cartridge or remove it and add one under the truck at the fuel tank. I run 2 filters, one under the truck and one before the carb.
Are the lights on when they flicker?

Ok great....I am going to check over all the lines and make sure there is nothing rotted...they all look brand new but ill double check them. Ill check on the fuel filter as well.

As far as the lights, its just the dash lights...headlights stay on, radio stays on...hit a bump dash lights go on, hit a bump they go off....so I know theres some sort of electrical thing going on.
