C4 Transmission Rebuild

Slips bad in first gear, no forward movement in D or 2. Reverse is fine. So from all the searching and reading on here it sounds like i'll be rebuilding it. Got a question for all you fella's out here, this isn't a race truck or anything, just a stock cruiser and that's it.... so does anybody think I'll need a different rebuild kit or will this one suffice?

That. Should work. A shift kit is always a good idea too.

What is the benefit of a shift kit? Ive had a shift kit in a chevy before, didn't really think I "needed" it...
I really drive this thing like a grandpa, just to cruise in's and work everyday. It's only got a 240 for crying out loud hahaha.

Then you surely don't NEED Shift kit, but the quicker shifts and higher clutch pressures will make the trans last longer and perform better. Just don't get a full blown bang shifting race kit.

If I remember correctly, I was going to use a TCI trans-scat kit before I swapped mine out for an AOD.

Just See what they have to offer

OK so I just had my C6 out and sealed up the front. Removing it was a bch and putting it back in was no walk in the park either. I never thought of rebuilding it. I figured that was best left up to the professionals.

How hard is it to rebuild a trans? It just looks like a bunch of gaskets and seals and stuff.

Transmissions are a different kind of animal. But the C4/C6 are said to be some of the easiest to rebuild. I attempted to rebuild my AOD but gave up when i pulled the pump and all the guts fell out in who knows what order.

As long as you take it apart, you should be able to remember how it goes together. Also, there is a workshop book on the C4/C6 if you need it.

Do yourself a favor and spend some bread at

Bad Shoe Productions How To Video Series - Ford Transmissions & Rears

for his C4 dvd set. I did and they are great. It takes all the guesswork out and covers EVERY part in and on the transmission and how to do preliminary checks before it goes in the vehicle.

It sounds like you have a worn out forward clutch pack, or the oring and seals in the forward clutch are shot. Having reverse means the low/reverse band is applying well.

So i got it rebuilt and clutch discs were shot. Gone is a better word lol. Got it all back together, and installed. Test drive in reverse backing out shop, great. Put into D and ease out of shop great. Pull onto road, just fine, till it never shifts into second or D. Tried to manual shift, no joy. So now I have R and 1, but no 2 or 3....any ideas? Fluid level is good, shift linkage is good, kick down linkage is installed (I know it doesn't really pertain to this just saying), don't know if this could be a vacuum modulator problem, or a valve body problem... i don't have a vacuum gauge, but the line is hooked to the manifold and the modulator and it worked fine before till the clutch disc went out. So not really leaning towards Vac Mod, but I am thinking valve body, just don't know what to look for when I get it apart.
Thanks in advance...

2nd gear is a band applying, 3rd gear is another clutch pack locking up to give direct drive all the way through.

It could be either a modulator, valve body problem, or a governor issue.

The governor opens up fluid to the valve body at different output shaft speeds through centrifugal force opening valves.

I'm a slow connection right now and can't find the link on his site, but Bad Shoe Productions How To Video Series - Ford Transmissions & Rears has a sample clip of his whole video showing the air checks you can do to test components without pulling the whole transmission.

Found it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucTqlOHhCxM

When mine gave me fits, I checked his dvd's I purchased, and sure enough, I had put the modulator valve piston back in backwards.......... that can cause shifting problems as well. It would shift from 1st to 2nd fine manually, then rev like it was in neutral when going into 3rd gear.

Good luck.

Uh huh. Here's the pic of the C4's internal parts, there's a lot more 'stuff' than just seals and gaskets.

The pic of the C6 internals is even more mind boggling, as it uses 3 clutch packs, forward, reverse and direct.

A transmission is just comprised of some parts and clearances.

This is a Ford 4R70W 4spd electronically shifted overdrive transmission I'm currently disassembling, to go through and rebuild. It will replace the C-4 in my '69 F100.

Transmission shops would like you to think it takes some sort of black art wizard with mystical powers and a voo-doo magic rooster foot to wave over the transmission to fix it.

I don't subscribe to that. Get a rebuild manual. Read and study it.

I've never rebuilt an automatic transmission before but, I figure if I can rebuild an engine, a carburetor or even change the brakes, I can rebuild an automatic transmission too.

No reason why you can't as well.

I have this manual:
Haynes/Ford automatic transmission overhaul manual techbook 10355 at AutoZone.com
It looks pretty thorough to me.

Got it from AutoZone. There's one in Chesnee.

Ultra, I'm like you bro. Tore the C6 out just cuz I knew I could. I'm sure I could cut the 9 hr job in half next time around hahahaha. All I did was fix leaks. Didn't rebuild anything. But I stood there looking at it thinking I'm sure I could do it, just didn't want it to be one of them deals where parts end up all over the place.

Let me know how it goes and let me know if you think it's worth the $1200 price tag a local shop quoted me. I only got one quote so who knows, there might be someone out there with a lesser quote.

I know a man's gotta make a living as I do not work for free. The rebuild kit is int the $100 ball park and it takes 12 hrs that's in the $100 hr range. About typical I guess but that's around where I start to figure I could just pay myself.
