1986 F-250 7.5 (460) – New Engine, Failed Visual Smog Check

I had the engine in my 1986 F-250 rebuilt (460) rebuilt about 6 months ago. Life was good, the engine ran great. Last week I received my registration renewal notice requiring a smog check at a test only station. Not a problem or so I thought. The smog technician ran the test, commented on how clean the engine was running then informed me that I failed the visual portion of the check. When I asked what the problem was he pointed out that the tube that runs from the air cleaner to the passenger side of the exhaust manifold was not connected. He said he would be happy to connect the hose but there was nothing to connect it to. Sure enough, when I looked the bottom of the hose was tied to the exhaust manifold with a piece of bailing wire. I went back to the engine builder and asked why they didn’t reinstall the shroud that the hose connects to. If you’re thinking he probably said it wasn’t installed when I brought the truck to him, you would be right. I have searched the junk yards, ebay, and everywhere on the Internet for a shroud. Part of the problem is I don’t know the actual name of the part to search for; I am calling it an exhaust shroud. Can someone tell me the actual name of the part, where I might find one or if there is an aftermarket kit that will work? Without a way to connect the tube the exhaust manifold I can’t pass smog to renew the registration. Thanks California.

The carb preheat stove or shroud. There are smaller tubes for the choke preheat that are also called carb perheat stoves, so let's stay with shroud for the manifold. This is for the smaller engine, but you can see the illustration to see exactly what we are talking about. Post 7 has the illustration:

From what I gather with a bit of a search, this is going to be a junk yard item. Ask your smoggy if he will accept a home built shroud. You can use flashing and rain gutter parts or something similar in galvanized sheet steel from your local Home Despot or other fine store. Tin snips, drill, rivets....voila, shroud that will accept the flexible tube and hot air will be on it's way.

Do your exhaust manifold bolts or studs have threaded ends sticking out which would allow you to fasten them to the stud/bolt? Stainless hose clamps will hold sheet metal to the manifolds.

PITA I know.

I had to dig one of those up for my Mustang back in 1975 when I moved to CA from WA. First and last smog inspection as they dropped the old cars not long after.

Good luck with it.

You could try this. It's definitely not made for your engine but if you could retro fit it on there, he might let it go.

65-67 AIR CLEANER HEAT TUBE/SHROUD

Here's another one, looks more complicated to make fit but it probably looks more like what came with your truck.

A few days back, another forum member shared his good fortune with a similar search...

The shroud on this one will or should have the right spacing for your motor, the 429 being identical in external dimensions. Lincolns and T bird with 429/460 would be on the list as well as almost anything with a 429/460 including medium trucks with the 370/429 truck version.
