Should I buy or pass?

I talked to the owner and he said the truck has a vibration around 40-60mph. He said a shop told him its his torque converter. I am not 100% sure but I think that is in fact wrong. I assume the torque converters job is much like a manual clutch and if it was going out it would make a grinding noise on startup. I imagine more than likely what's causing the vibration is either a dead cylinder due to spark plug, COP, injector, injector harness etc. OR He has some bad u joints?

It's a salvage title, but I honestly don't care as long as the truck isn't a mess. The guy basically said the truck was rolled on its side and the owner had the body that's on it now put on to replace the dented body from the previous accident.

It's a limited which is a plus and its a V10. I have an extra set of COPS, Injectors, and other spare parts I could use to help diagnose the issue.

Wife is wanting an excursion, but doesn't want to pay 10-14k for a used one.

$4000?! If it's really as clean as it looks, I'd buy it!

I doubt the converter is the issue. Btw, the converter is basically a fluid coupler that uses ATF and stator vanes to transfer engine power to the transmission. Very simple explanation, for the most part I stand by they work on witchcraft.

Either way, you can come out ahead of a similar condition X with that mileage.

Check in the tech folder sticky up top, there's a HUGE chart on troubleshooting vibrations at different speeds, etc.

Have you driven it yet, or just going on what the seller is telling you?

Just going off what the seller told me. I am trying to schedule a time to drive it. It's his current daily driver.

As with all salvage titled vehicles, contact your insurance regarding cost. I've seen some insurance companies flat our reject a salvaged vehicle or charge you higher rates for crap insurance.

X2 on what Jeremy said....also, the vibration could be as easy as a bad/unbalanced tire (they look pretty bad in the pics) or even a U-joint. With only 113k it seems like a good deal, even if you have to put a little bit into it.

Yeah, there is a wrecked F250 V10 on craigslist locally as well. Guy said the running gear and engine are in good condition. He is asking $1000. So figure for 5k I could piece it together if needed. I am going to look at it Sunday. I will see how much work is required and report back.

I would pass, but that's only because I know what everyone would have said to me if I had asked a year ago. I paid twice as much for mine, but I got 3 times more truck.

Torque covertors can cause a vibration like that. I believe it's called torque covertor shudder. My 05 F-150 had the same issue you described and it was indeed the covertor causing it. Just my thoughts. I'd absolutely buy this if its not just awful inside. The seller sucks at taking pictures.

I have to wonder if the dash cluster is the original to the chassis or the one that came with the replacement body. Really don't look bad for 4k. As mentioned earlier, check with your insurance company before purchasing it. Keep us posted!

Offer 3,000 and see what happens. :-P

The salvaged title is the part that would worry me. I would be afraid to put much money into it because it would be hard to re-sell.

I've seen a few V-10 Ex's here in the north west in the 6-8K Range. If you didn't mind drivin'.

If I paid 4k for it... I wouldn't ever care to sell it. So not really worried about the title issue.

If I could get it for even less... That's just awesome. I am going to look at it this Sunday and will let you guys know either way.

with the modular motors, they have been known to cause a shudder feeling when the COPS are bad.

For $4k I'd take a chance with it provided the interior is in decent shape. The motor/trans are worth almost that much anyways

Totally different situation.

From my recollection you basically wanted a truck you WOULDN'T have to work on or try to keep whatever repairs to a bare minimum.

The OP has extra parts and time/energy/effort/money to throw at a project truck AND he has a working vehicle to use in the meantime.
