I am thinking about painting the whole truck. Its a factory black now but the roof is oxidized, tops of fenders and doors are oxidized too and someone repainted the hood single stage at some point.
I am thinking about Lincolns Tuxedo Black which has a slight pearl in it.
Anyone else do a repaint? Anything to know besides stripping it down as far as possible then prep prep.prep....?
I'm very picky so for me it would be remove door handles, mirrors, window modeling, roof rack, emblems, headlights, tail lights, bumpers, and anything else that I couldn't get new paint too
Well starting with a factory black EX and going to another newer black will save you a few grand as it won't require pulling the interior for a full color change.
I am thinking about doing a wrap on mine instead of painting
I was thinking of going this route as a cheaper alternative to painting and was surprised to find out it wouldn't be significantly cheaper. Also the wrapping usually doesn't hold up as well as paint does.
This info was provided by a guy who does wrapping for a living and he was discouraging me from doing it on the EX.
I am not planning on doing the jams as they are in decent shape. The outside is a bit rough in a lot of spots besides the oxidation and will have all body work done too.
Comparing colors its close enough you'll never tell the jams are not the same black.
I am going to remove everything possible to get it down as far as I can to just metal.
I was thinking of doing the same thing--mine is factory white, and the truck is good except for the roof... Not thrilled with white, but not thrilled with the idea of having to get all the jambs and in-between spots.
To do it right requires a lot of work. Pull all glass, door handles, bumpers, cladding etc, etc, etc. you don't want any pint lines as that is where the peeling will begin. Do it right the first time!
I have done it a couple of times. If you do want to change colors I always go two tone and leave the original color on the truck and use a good color to two tone it s then you don't have to paint the door jams.
Here is an 04 I did. Was wrecked in the front end. Put the 05 front end on and two toned the Arizona beige with pearl black with a pearl red stripe.
That looks great!
I have the Arizona beige cladding on it now. I am planning on doing it all black, keeping the chrome accents to a minimum- cladding chrome strip, bumpers, mirror caps, running boards and grill. I think it will look like just enough.
