Top Radiator Hose replacement

Ok guys this may seem like a dumb question but how the heck do you remove the top radiator hose 1994 F150, 4.9L.

Seems like an easy thing but there is a black metal band at the end of the hose going on to the thermostat housing. Is this some sort of sadistic trick by Ford to confuse folks who maintain their own vehicles?

Once off (if you guys can help) does it take a special hose from Ford or can I replace with a regular Autozone hose for this truck and use your basic hose clamp? Thanks......Van

I replaced mine on a 94 with a 5.0 with the auto zone hose, fit perfectly. The band may be one of the clip type of hose clamps, but a regular hose clamp is fine.

Thanks markcrane. Now if I can figure out how to get the original off I'll be in good shape. This dumb band is metal, about an inch or more wide, has no tabs to grab with pliers or even a seam that I can see. Almost looks like it was pressed on.

The only thing I can figure is maybe your supposed to grab hold with a danged pipe wrench or something to turn it. Or maybe cut it off with a chisel. Ford did not have a better idea on this thing.....Van

I haven't seen a clamp like that before. Maybe another member has? Sorry for the trouble. It should be a straighforward change. Good luck, and I am interested to hear the results.

I agree mark, it should be straightforward and maybe it is but it's nothing like I've ever seen. I've changed every radiator hose on every car I've ever owned for going on 40 years (except for my wife's 200 Honda Accord, don't need it yet) and I ain't never seen nothing like this ;-).......Van

Well, it looks like Ford put those stupid metal collars on for a couple of years. Hammer and chisel should work....Van

Never hammer against a fitting, use a saw. A small cutoff tool - even a dremel will work.

Pounding against a fitting is a sure way to break it.

Good luck.
