1964 F100 Power Steering Options

Folks, what are you using for power steering? My son and I are working on his stock 64 and would like to add PS. I don't see a lot of options for the mid 60's trucks however I read somewhere that some were using the gear boxes out of the F500/600 trucks.

any ideas?

I'm in the process of doing this conversion on my '66 F100. Just a couple days ago I pulled the steering gear, pump, hoses and linkages (from gear to the steering knuckles) from a '76. I also took the steering column. My main guide here is the site called "Fordification" which has a good tutorial on this conversion. I suggest you google it and go to the "technical articles" link. You'll find it there.

The '66 is relatively easy. Fewer options for a '64 with straight axle.

Thanks for pointing this out. I didn't know that. A 66 is the oldest truck I've had.

How long is your steering shaft from the firewall bracket to the next spot? EPAS might be an option if there is room. They can be found cheap at the junk yard off Saturn Ions. The control is only like 60 off ebay. Just some connecting to do after that

I'll be using the CPP kit that is for '57-'60 on my '61. I've talked to a couple of guys who've done it and the modifications necessary are slight.
I bought a column saver bearing and I will be cutting the stock column and shaft off the stock box and re-using the column.

I'd be very interested to know about the modifications required to use the 57-60 kit. I also have a 64 and would like to add p/s.

I'll take a bit of time and document it as I go. One thing I know going in is that you have to enlarge the hole in the frame the pitman shaft goes through. Other mods, I'm sure I'll find as I go along.

There used to be a company that offered aftermarket power steering kits for straight axle pickups, but that was back in the 60's, I believe it was Ross, but not sure, probably no longer in business.

I have heard of using parts from a Toyota 4x4 for a straight axle truck.

The box I'm buying from CPP is supposed to be an improvement on the Toyota box. Sure wish they'd ship the dang thing.

I started by ordering the CPP5760PSK-OC. Order guy noticed that it didn't match the CPP6164CBK5.5 disc brake kit I had just ordered and asked about it.
When I told him what was up, he changed out the rag joint in the kit for a universal joint, and then he recommended the column saver kit when I told him I intended to cut the column off the old steering box. Then he asked about the pump, and sold me a pump with the correct brackets for my motor.
As to cost, not sure at this point. I get a jobber discount from them, and there will be added freight costs. At this point they've only charged my card $100. We'll see what happens when it ships.

Any update on this conversion? I'm looking at that option for my 64.
