help with rear drum brakes on 1966 f600

I just bought this truck to pull my rv, it runs great, but the previous owner didn't tell me about the rear brake problems, i was told just vacuum booster needed to be replaced, well I did that, i have never worked on a truck this size, i had to buy some new tools to work with the larger sized truck, anyway, i had to get a 1" pin less impact gun, while trying to get the 1 1/2" lug nuts off they all broke, i know on the small 1960s 3/4 and 1 ton ford's you have to pull axle shaft to remove the drums, this truck has a split axle and 12 bolts on the drive line side of axle to get to differential, anyone knowing anything about this truck, axle, drum brakes assembly and how I can remove the drums, i have a bad wheel cylinder in the driver's side drum, it looks like there is two cylinders per drum .
Any help please

You should purchase a 1966 factory service manual because it will have all the information about repairing your brake set up. I work on class 7/8 trucks with air brakes but the hub/drum set up is the same. You need to remove the 8 bolts on the axle shaft flange and might have to smack the face of the axle shaft with a small sledge or air hammer to break the gasket seal. Once the axle shaft is removed you can access the wheel bearing nut to remove the drum/hub assembly. I'm not positive on what size lug nuts/studs you need but they are "Budd" type so there are left and right hand threads for each side of the truck. Napa Auto parts carries large truck parts so they should be able the help you when you have it all apart and see what you need. But you will need the 1966 factory service manual for all the torque specs. when pre-loading your wheel bearings etc. I would post a copy of the pages from the shop manual but I just put all of my manuals/parts books in storage last week. Hopefully somebody else can post something quickly so I don't have to dig them out.

Ebay has the Canadian (Mercury/Ford Truck) complete shop manual. It is an original printing so the pictures are much better than the photocopied reproduction manuals. The Canadian version come as one very thick book, while the U.S. version is split between 4 volumes. For a little more than $50, it is a good investment. I know because I have copies of 1965 and 1966 (both U.S. and Canadian versions). http://www.ebay.com/itm/1966-Ford-and-Mercury-Truck-Shop-Service-Manual-Canadian-Original-Pickup-H-D-66/311279754362?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D29159%26meid%3D7df16489203347b5aa54430867d5211a%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D311279754362

I am guessing you broke them all, because they are LH threads. My 73 SCS still had the LH threads on the driver side rear. After I couldn't budge the second one I tried, I had to look real close and see the L on the stud. Course you usually only make that mistake once,,
good luck with brakes,,, NAPA usually has whatever I need, or can direct me to who does.

In order to get the correct rear brake parts, either from NAPA or NOS (all are obsolete), you will need to know the size of the rear brake shoes.

Pic: Column left, lower. As you can see, there is more than one size.

And, you unknowingly typed this thread in the wrong forum. 1961/66 forum is mainly for F100/350's. Thread belongs in the LARGE TRUCK forum where you'll get more help.

I just asked a moderator to move your thread there.

I feel really stupid not looking that close at the threads, I've never heard of reverse threads on anything but propane.

Click on the third one, "Service Manual", "standard hub drive axle".

Page 27. Drum is separate:
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...xploded%20view

Note this is a general item, if you know your axle model number, you can search for that specific axle. Eaton has billions of PDFs on the net with views of everything.

Also, I looked at one of your other pictures and it looked like you had this thing blocked up on the drum and hub. You need to have it blocked up well inboard of where you are working, and IMO, you need to have the frame blocked up in addition to the axle. If this thing falls off the blocking, they will simply cover the whole mess and mark it as your grave.

1) 1" impact gun with air compressor to match
2) Really high quality 1" breaker bar and socket
3) 5' of pipe
4) 500 ft/lb torque wrench
