Trailering an Ex

Assuming a trailer is rated for the weight of an Excursion, what is the minimum length y'all would recommend to trailer an Ex? I have to pick one up from just north of Indy and bring it about 50 miles north, and I'm having problems locating a big enough trailer to borrow/rent.

I know it's not the smartest thing to do, but someone on here put one on a uhaul.... It barely fit... But if your not sure measure the uhaul trailer and add about a foot.

What are you pulling with ?? BETTER have brakes. I used a HD tow dolly to pull 1 X with another X. Just pull the drive shaft, strap her down & run with it. After I got used to all the noises a tow dolly makes could run 65-70 MPH no sweat

18 foot car hauler would do it, if you don't mind hanging off the back a little. We used our 20 foot to haul our CCSB Chevy 2500HD about 500mi behind our our other 2500HD. Worked out fine, but it is a heavier duty car hauler with 5200lb axles and brakes on both. I wouldn't haul an EX on one with 3500lb axles personally.

Just wanted a reason to post this picture of my old one.

I say as long as the tires fit on the trailer, it is rated for the weight, and it has brakes....it must have brakes.

24ft car hauler would be more than enough.

I'd be towing with my Super Duty, so the tow vehicle isn't an issue. I looked into U-Haul, and everything they have has a max capacity in the 5k range, so, no go. I'm no stranger to a vehicle hanging off the back some, but I don't want to risk using a trailer that isn't up to the task.

It's only 11.5 feet between the wheels. It'll fit on a 16 I believe but you won't have any room to move it to adjust tongue weight and you'll have to run axle straps to the middle. 18 would be more comfortable. If its a diesel you may well be way over tongue weight on a shorter trailer so that's something to consider. On my 16 foot trailer I'd probably load it backwards but I'd scale it to check my tongue weight before I hit the highway. You'll need a minimum of a 10k trailer to handle the excursions weight. My trailer is 10k gross and 8k net and my excursion weighs 8270. You can overhang the trailer deck front and rear if your weights are ok.

My 2000 v10 limited on a 14' deck 10k lb equipment trailer behind a Dodge 3500 Cummins. Towed just fine. I would have liked a longer and wider trailer but I don't trust my 18' deck car trailer to handle the weight.

Just wanted to report that is ridiculously AWESOME!

Out of curiosity, what was the clearance to the bottom of the stepboards, before removed?

It was just about 4ft from the ground to the bottom of the doors. My favorite thing to do was take it in a drive thru and just watch the reactions from all the people inside. Well that and park it wherever I wanted because when someone said I can't, my response was "If you can find a tow truck to get it before I get back, they deserve the tow."

It was very crooked, but I needed it at that angle to even come close to hooking up. It pulled just fine.

Sorry man, you totally got

Razzi towed mine on a 20' car hauler with no problems. Bumpers barely fit end to end, and the tires were dragging the side rails on and off, but not too bad considering they're 35's.

Poke around in your area for trailer rentals outside of U-Haul. The place here charges $73/day plus mileage which was ridiculous for something that doesn't even have electric brakes. I hate hydraulic brakes with a passion, HATE.

Several places around here offer a variety of trailers to rent including car haulers. The one we used when Stay Puft was down for bad fuel was the aforementioned 20', electric brakes on both axles and took a 2 5/16" ball. $60/24hrs, and overall I felt a much safer option than U-Haul for the heft of the Excursion. Having a plethora of tiedowns is very nice as well.
