4" Exhaust...Shhhh!

Our new-to-us 2002 Excursion Limited 7.3L Diesel "Enterprise" is getting modded these next few weeks. I'm working on the parts and suppliers, but I'm stumped on the exhaust.

Looking for a 4" QUIET exhaust- at least in the cab. Need the larger exhaust for the pending Hydra tuning, new intake, and wicked wheel plans.

I desire stainless steel because of the ice-salt state we live in.

Drone isn't welcome.

If the inside of the Enterprise is dead silent and outside sounds like a rock concert, no matter to me

I've looked at Diamond Eye Downpipes, but no quiet tones in this model.

Not sure of MBRP sound, is it loud? Resonators?

I have a Flomaster Series 44 (I think) on my V8 4Runner. Love the outside sound, but drone inside and it gets old on a long trip.

I am not opposed to 5" if that's what it takes, but no need to spend more if not necessary for the looks. I can add a stainless tip of whatever size or shape.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Magnaflow or AFE muffler. Both quiet and have a nice deep tone when in the skinny pedal

Biggest complaint on 5".... drone....

The stock exhaust is fine for a chip, Wheel, and intake. So long as you're not considering up-grading the Injectors or trying to run 100HP Chip

Whitetmw- I am looking to make up to 400hp with PHP Hydra and couple of mods. Likely it will be in the less-tuned settings, opting for MPG instead, most of the time, but from what I've read 400hp is pretty much the line in the sand between $ and $$$, so we'll call that the ceiling. I can't see need for anything more.

Towing our camper (about 6k-6.5k) and long haul driving trips with my family are the primary use. Now if it's just me and not hauling, nothing to say I might not "crank that dial" LOL

Tim- Thanks for the links. I had read some of those, still following all the different linked discussions. Sounds like this poor fellow went down this road with his van and had the problems I am looking to avoid. Haven't found the happy ending yet. Care to spoil the ending for me?

I am tempted to order aluminized (cheap) system to minimize the cut-and-swap expenses in case we aren't happy with the results. In a couple of years I would replace the "final" system with stainless.

It's more $$ this way, but might be smarter $$?

But that is why I'm asking for advice from those of you who have done it or know more about it than I do

I have a 4" on my truck, I don't even remember the brand... it's quiet in the truck, but not outside it. Possibly because it's a crew cab long box... the exhaust exits 15' from my head!

Yep I never left, just the chapter

If you want 400 whp you're going to have to upgrade injectors. 330ish is all your going to make with stock sticks.

One thing I did notice with new exhaust is that the engine 'drone' is less than stock.

I have the Banks monster exhaust and love it. No drone but a nice deep throaty sound.

Just to add some more - I've got a 4" setup, no cat, with a high flow (nothing special) muffler. Not an off-the-shelf system, it was put together by a friend who owns an exhaust shop. I've got drone centered around 1800RPM. It's only audible from 55-60mph, which kinda sucks when I'm towing. I'd love to get rid of it, but I sure don't want to lose the turbo whistle, so I don't think I want a resonator. I'll be interested if anyone has success killing the drone with a 4" system, yet keeping the whistle.

I still hear my turbo whistle just fine with the Banks exhaust.
