I'm not tell you what to do but, I started with a truck in about the same condition as yours. I was thinking I would do a "quick" clean up and get'er'runin. Well, after looking at what it needed I decided to do it right. The best thing I have done is get the cab sand blasted! I cost me $165 but now a have a blank canvas. All the guess work is out and I can get the cab done right. When I get it done it should look nice and be ready for many years to come.

Sorry about the passing of your Dad. I have my Dad's 53 also, he gave it to me back in 1979. Drove it for a while, and enjoyed it. After that parked it, life happened, working, raising kids, the normal good stuff in life. My Dad passed in 2001. Always wished that I could had gotten it restored before he passed. Cab on truck was about like yours. I picked up another one at the f100 super nationals in really good shape. Remember a lot of good times in the old truck with my Dad, running around with him, working on it with him. Its a slow build but hope to get it done. Hang in there. Stayed tuned to FTE. I have been hanging around here since about 2005. Lots of informative help and ideas. Great people on here to keep you motivated.

Man I scored tonight I think. I went to my parents place to have dinner with mom and went to look for more parts dad had stashed away. I figured I'd go look in the bed of his parts truck and noticed the bed had nicer top rails so I started digging to look at the inner lip and it was in great shape. So I think I just shortened my work time by days because this other bed really just needs the new lower panels and the rear stake panels which I have new! I also found a hood that was a lot nicer too.
