I'm not tell you what to do but, I started with a truck in about the same condition as yours. I was thinking I would do a "quick" clean up and get'er'runin. Well, after looking at what it needed I decided to do it right. The best thing I have done is get the cab sand blasted! I cost me $165 but now a have a blank canvas. All the guess work is out and I can get the cab done right. When I get it done it should look nice and be ready for many years to come.

Sorry about the passing of your Dad. I have my Dad's 53 also, he gave it to me back in 1979. Drove it for a while, and enjoyed it. After that parked it, life happened, working, raising kids, the normal good stuff in life. My Dad passed in 2001. Always wished that I could had gotten it restored before he passed. Cab on truck was about like yours. I picked up another one at the f100 super nationals in really good shape. Remember a lot of good times in the old truck with my Dad, running around with him, working on it with him. Its a slow build but hope to get it done. Hang in there. Stayed tuned to FTE. I have been hanging around here since about 2005. Lots of informative help and ideas. Great people on here to keep you motivated.

Nice that you were able to keep it in the family. Hopefully you can pass it on to someone else as well. Is that a t56 or a t45?

Looking good. Did you stitch weld that panel? Or just do small sections at a time? It doesn't look all that thick?

Man I scored tonight I think. I went to my parents place to have dinner with mom and went to look for more parts dad had stashed away. I figured I'd go look in the bed of his parts truck and noticed the bed had nicer top rails so I started digging to look at the inner lip and it was in great shape. So I think I just shortened my work time by days because this other bed really just needs the new lower panels and the rear stake panels which I have new! I also found a hood that was a lot nicer too.

I would be very careful blasting it yourself. You can easily warp the back of your cab or your doors if you don't know what your doing. I don't know your history with blasting, but I'd hate to see you go blasting and wreck your Dads truck. I got told by numerous body shops not to sandblast my 51 cab. There's certain parts you can do like the firewall and it shouldn't warp to easily, but on a big flat space like the back wall its not to structural. I even got told not to send it out unless the shops credible or will use walnuts or something other than sand. I know lots of guys have sent there's out and no problems, but I know guys who have sent stuff out and had it all get warped by the guy doing it.

Just my 2 cents on blasting, take it or leave it, its your truck haha. Looking good so far!
