1949 F5
Hello All. My son and I are rebuilding a 1949 F5. It was a barn find and we are finding the teardown relatively easy. It has a Timken rear end with a 6:20 gear ratio. I am picking up a Dana 60 1 ton dually Rear end with 4:11 gears to replace the Timken for road cruising. We are going to have the V8 flathead rebuilt. Two questions, Is this a good choice for the rear end? What color was the engine originally painted. I am sure this will not be my last questions. You guys are great.

Welcome to the forum. Very nice looking F5 I installed a Dana 70 with 4:10 gears under my '49 F4. I am running 32 inch diameter tires and it has a decent cruise speed. And, I am running a .70 OD and that makes for a very nice cruise speed.
Edit: My guess is the 4:10 is about all the flat head will pull. If I understand you're in Michigan so you should have no mountains.

From what I have read on the FTE forum is that the flathead will be all it can be with the 4:11 gear. Yes I am in Michigan with no mountains and this will be a fair weather hauler. I have a 24' Custom BBQ rig that I will haul with this. Thanks for the info. Here is a picture of the dash Every gauge and light works.

Nice looking black F-5. Black is the color I'm intending for my current project. BTW, welcome to the group.
I also had intentions of a big truck project such as yours. But a year or so ago faced truth that it wasn't getting done so sold off the pieces I had gathered. One of those pieces was a Dana 70HD complete rear axle from a late 1970s/early 1980s Dodge RM400/500 motor home. This axle has your same 5 lug x 8" wheel bolt pattern, has a 4.56/1 ratio, and is a near bolt in swap. The only modification to my understanding is a 1/8" spacing mod to the spring perch pads on each side. The guy that bought mine installed it under an F-500, and I've since met a Studebaker owner who has done the same conversion to his truck. All Dana axles carry a Bill of Materials (BOM) code that signifies the vehicle in which it is used. The BOM code on my axle was 603652. This can help a yard do you a search.
Of equal or greater benefit to finding such a motor home donor would be to also save its 19.5" wheels. Your truck presently has its original widow maker 20" wheels that you will want to replace. If you are unfamiliar with them do a Google search for the industry name for them, Firestone RH-5°. Stu
