Bad Converter--need advice

My 2004 Ford Explorer has recently been acting up. Money is tight and my catalytic converter is pretty much shot. I have done the research and am fully aware of it being illegal to remove my cat. I need advice on installing test piping in its place. Do I need to remove the entire Y-frame to install the TP or what? Also, will it sound decent if I have a test pipe in with my stock exhaust system. (there happens to be a hole in my muffler too so that already makes it rumble a little). PLEASE HELP.

You have an O2 sensor after the cat so removing it will thro a CEL. I suggest buying an universal cat to replace it.

I think I'm just going to install a straight pipe and see how I like it. Thanks for the help!
