After watching for months now, a 9" (for a 68- 72 F1-50) came up on the local CL. If you remember Im running my Dana 53 with open diff. in good shape but parts are hard to find. So this would be a project for later. At $100 should I jump on it or pass? All I know about it is whats in the ad.1968 TO 72 F150 FORD 9" REAR END AND LEAF SPRINGS

 

If it was close to me Jimmy it would be loaded in the back of my 1/2 ton and I'd be headed home, I'm looking for one of those now.

Jim, run to get this before someone else beats you to it! Has new looking lowering springs, and 3.5 is an ideal ratio for you. It would be a good deal (assuming it has good gears and bearings) at even 3X the asking price, It's worth more than the asking price as parts, you can get 100.00 just for the housing or for the pumpkin. Look here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...ial_Swaps.html for the proper flange to flange dimension and measure that one and compare that it is what it should be as well as the spring leaf width. Make sure the top horizontal rib on the pumpkin is straight, not bent down at the end (not a 9") Seals are easily replaced.

Jimmy, that's a steal for the price...I personally have moved on to 8.8 rearends but the 9 inchers are still in demand. Here in SoCal you can buy a 2002 Explorer 8.8 rearend with 3.73 gears, TracLoc, and disc brakes for $120...plus they are 59-1/2 inches wide which gives you a little room to play with deeper dished wheels. Good luck...

 

"Update" The seller of the 9" returned my call, and I have an appointment to pick it up Saturday am. He seems like a real nice guy, and is throwing in the backing plates and brake drums. Thank' s to all of you for the guidance, I printed out all the pertinent info on 9"ers to take with me. ("gerrymoe", Ill PM you after I see what happens sat.)

 

1968/72 F100's (no F150's until 1975) have 11" x 2 1/4" rear brakes.

The rear springs are the Flex-O-Matic type as they have compensators on them (visible in the pic).

These springs were an option on 1968/72 F100's.

Without Flex-O-Matic, the rear springs are 2 1/4" wide, 24" > eye bolt < 28"

With Flex-O-Matic, the rear springs are 2 1/4" wide, 24" > eye bolt < 32"

Be aware that there were TWO different 1968/72 9" rear axles. One has 28 spline axle shafts, the other has a 9 3/8" ring gear, 31 spline axle shafts and Traction Lock.

Only 5 parts are the same 9 vs 9 3/8: Housing gasket, pinion seal, pilot bearing retainer, one pinion bearing and cup.

EVERYTHING else is different!

btw: Have you ever been to Big M Automotive in Williams? Mike has over 2,000 old rolling piles of misery in his yard, most of which are FoMoCo related.

When I say old, I mean old (mainly 1940/60's). There are no modern piles in this yard, none!
