1995 as a first diesel?

How is a 1995 F250 4x4 with a supecab for a first diesel? It's a CA truck with around 250k miles.

What's a good asking price and what are some good questions to ask?

How much is he asking for it, what has been done to it, how much rust the list goes on. Use the thread search tool in the forum, you'll find a wealth of information of what to ask for.

Like John said, it depends on the price. the good thing about the CA trucks is they come with split shot injectors and have the capability for a little more power than our single shot trucks. Has it been in CA all of its life? The mileage isn't bad for the year. Check the stickies for information on these trucks. It'll help a great deal.

Automatic or manual transmission? Short or long bed? As said, that mileage is not out of the ordinary, but maintenance history is important. It's esp. important to know the history of the transmission if it's an automatic, or the clutch if it's a manual.

As far as "first diesel" is concerned, these trucks are odd ducks in many respects. A lot of "old wisdom" about gassers doesn't apply to diesels, and that goes doubly so for the first generation PSDs. Just keep an open mind about it, don't make any assumptions based on any other trucks, and come here (and to the other PSD forums) for good (if not slightly biased...) background info. If you're considering as much DIY maintenance as possible, a set of factory manuals is a VERY good investment. Our first diesel is a '95, and with the help of the FSMs and these forums, we're plenty happy.

The CA trucks do have the better injectors, but they also have a (slightly) more complex glow plug circuit, and an extra gizmo on the fuel pump which complicates the R&I. Nothing major, however.

Are you going to make it a daily driver? I know I tried to make my truck a DD but with all the work it needed I had to have another vehicle.

I don't think the Cali trucks got the split shot injectors until 96.

["D'OH" smiley required here...] ^^^^ +1; same thing applies to the GP relay shunt and the UFO fuel pump. Come to think of it, there is no "California" '95 truck, if memory serves.
