What should I do about a 92 4.0 leaking oil so bad?

This 92 Ranger I have is leaking oil so much. I go through 2-3 quarts between 3,000 mile oil changes. I unsuccessfully replaced the front crank seal 3 times. I was told to try a sleeve 'n seal next time. But that doesn't appear to be the only place leaking oil. The whole bottom of the oil pan is wet with clean oil. I don't see oil coming down from the sides of the block above the exhaust. My mechanic seems to think it's all coming from the rear main seal. I know some have said here that the intake vally gasket can leak down on the back. But I can't tell for sure. I tried to snug up some of the oil pan bolts but they were all tight. It says in every service manual including Ford's to remove the engine and mount it on a stand to perform an oil pan gasket change. That's crazy. I know sometimes when you change a rear main seal it continues to leak depending on the condition of the crankshaft. Mine has 110,000 miles on it. How much oil could be leaking from the valley pan gasket? My mechanic said he would pull the transmission and put in a new rear main seal for $100. But that's a lot of other stuff that has to be removed and then reinstalled possibly creating more problems. Should I have the valley pan gasket, valve covers done first? Maybe install the sleeve n' seal on the timing front crankshaft? I was even debating getting a 4.0 from the junkyard and resealing it on a stand but I don't know if it would be any better. Is it worth taking it in for a 100% oil leak inspection to Ford and then performing the repairs elsewhere?

I thought I had a bad main seal, so took it in to the shop (Indy) and he pulled the trans. Rear main not leaking. Said it was from the valley and valve covers. He also said the pan gasket was leaking and it needed to be changed. Well I told him to go ahead and they did not pull the engine. They loosened the motor mouths and lifted the engine high enough so they could pull the pan. Trans was out already. The 94 (late 93 build) has a funny shaped gasket for the pan and it is about like an O ring fit. Anyhow I had them last summer replace the front seal when I had the gasket on the water jacket replaced because it was leaking. Did the timing chain water pump etc all the same time. Anyhow while the pan was off had him install new oil pump.

With all this done he also R&Rd the clutch system (autozone with lifetime, so no questions asked on replacements). Only thing paid extra for was the install of the master cyl as it was not part of the pieces already removed. When all said and done no leaks and all new gaskets through out the system. I already had installed the rear main last time I had installed a clutch but thought I may have screwed it up! Anyhow replaced everything gasket seal wise and happy for it. BTW truck has 300000+ on it original engine trans has been only sore spot.

The oil filter adapters have been known to leak. Have you checked that? With a leak as large as yours, I would suspect other leak points as well, though.

Make sure you replace the PCV valve, if it's clogged up & acts out & sticks closed it, along with blow by from worn, varnished, gummed, or carbon choked rings, can cause an over pressure condition in the engine that can blow oil out the weakest seal or gasket.
