P40 steering box

Hi guys, new here.
10 yr ex Ford dealer mechanic '86-'96.

Have I got one for you!
I got a '74 P40 incomplete chassis... Vin# P40BVT92xxx
See avatar. W/Penn body.
Manual box (no tag), drum brakes.
The gauges in this thing look just like the '57 F350 I had a long time ago...
So this thing is made up of leftover parts!
I have had luck ordering parts (brakes) for a '74 F350 as most don't have listing.

Problem, The steering input shaft, worm gear is missing part of a tooth.
Basic part # 3524.
From my research the Ford dealer gave me the wrong part # C5TZ-G.
Parts book said it was 7.5 inches long and mine is like 40 inches long.
Can anyone help me find the right part # so I can then look for the right part?
Also need part # for complete gear box, basic # 3504
Found many great part sources on this forum.
THANKS!!!!

P40 = P400 Parcel Delivery Chassis / B = 300 1V I-6 / V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant / T92XXX = 1974.

From my research the Ford dealer gave me the wrong part # C5TZ-G = 1965/72 F100/250 2WD & 1967/72 F350 with M/S.

The first thing I did was search the part #.
I found out that the # was wrong From a listing at some vendor, length.
Then I found a thread that you, NumberDummy, had helped someone else with the same problem.
I thought, THIS is the guy I need to help me.
I registered and here you are!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Judging by the amount of posts you have made I'm sure you've been at it a looooong time. Guys like you are gold on a forum.
I remember when parts men were MEN, and knew how to read a BOOK!
Not computer jockeys that give up at the drop of a hat.
The parts guy at Ford I talked to I used to work with.
And I know he used to look up parts in a real book.
They haven't seen the books in so long they don't know where to find them.
And they cringe every time they see me coming.
A sigh of relief comes over them when I say it's a 2010 I'm working on.

I will try and measure the shaft to verify and let you know.
As I have seen shafts listed in the 45 and 47 inch range.

THANKS AGAIN!

It's a pretty cool truck.
I upgraded the rear suspension to 79 springs and perches (rubber bushings) and gear from 4.56 to 4.11.
Also put late model efi exhaust manifolds and an Offy intake with a 390 Holley.
Breaks 10 mpg now. Weighs 10,000#s.
It's got some Mustang seats and is all carpeted in back,
was fricken loud with 3" exhaust out the back.
I use it to haul tools and my dragbike to the race track.
Or when my other car blows up, like right now.
So you can see my problem.

Al Pratt, the fleet manager at a Ford dealership I worked for in the mid 1960's, bought 100 P350's at an auction. They were original purchased by Frito-Lay and had 100's of 1000's of miles on them.

Al had them painted white at Earl Scheib, had the used car mechanic (he was 80 years old and feeble) tune 'em up and do other minor repairs...then sells them with a SIX MONTH WARRANTY!

You can guess what happened next...before too long, many were towed into the dealership with blown engines, transmissions, rear axles, yadda yadda yadda.

The costs to fix these piles nearly bankrupted the dealer, had to merge with another.

Al Pratt was then known as Al P. Ratt!

Maybe I could trade it in to them and buy it back with a warranty!!!!
Mine was owned by a city and is just breaking 90,000.
Has rebuilt trans and runs great.
Found unclaimed newer head at a local machine shop.
The reason I went to rubber bushing rear springs is because I caught a rear spring pin JUST before it fell out!
If I could change one thing it would be the whole front suspension and drum brakes. Just can't find anything that will fit. Brakes have been an issue. Proportioning valve $160????? Probably wrong # too.

It is great for camping at the racetrack.
It has been a good truck and I've had it as long as it took my 80 club wagon to completely rust out!
I get two people a month stop by to try and buy it.
They don't know what they'd be in for!

Part purchased from NOS Only, $155 plus ship, good deal.
Not bad for a part that only 3 people in the country have.
Found one more under old part #.

Update...
Part received!
Part installed!
HARD PART DONE!
Had to remove the bumper and jack front wheels a foot of the ground.
Oh, and cut a little aluminum body out behind the bumper.
Rebuilding the box wasn't that bad, had enough shims.
Found big TRW under all the grease.
On the road again... at least it's safe now.
Thanks again NumberD!
Bad news.
Need sector, gear had some pitting.
Good news, I can replace it with the box in the truck!
Basic # 3575.
Any help GREATLY appreciated!

CRAP!! Bill is absolutely correct!
I went to the page that has parts list #1 and looked up basic p/n 3575, in the column next to parts list #1 is parts list #42. I grabbed the WRONG part number..

Here is the page from the Ford parts catalog listing the part numbers for your steering box.
Use parts list #1 NOT #42 like I did .

I haven't done anything about finding that part yet.
I was planning on checking the accuracy of your post but haven't got to it yet.
That's how I found you guys.
That # didn't sound right to me because the worm was replaced with a '71 #.
I would assume the sector would be replaced at the same time or use original #.
I started to learn how to look up parts in the '80s but never got good at it.
And sure can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday!

The box was in pretty good shape.
Except for the missing tooth on the worm and slight pitting on the sector.
So for now it's all back together and safe to drive.
Set it up a little loose so not to damage the new worm.
Will get to the sector as soon as funds are available.

Once again THANKS GUYS for all your help!
I haven't left the house much in the last week + .5 and I am just happy to be back on the road.
I think I'll go see a good blues band, or two, this weekend!
Hope to be able to spend some more time here soon and hopefully have a project or two.
And return the favor by helping out a few people if I can.

Whew! Glad you didn't order that part. I still can't believe I made such a "rookie" mistake.
Glad Bill was looking over my shoulder and caught the mistake.
