I'm having issues with my map lights in my truck. when I turn the light on via switch or when the door opens sometimes it works fine. But sometimes they don't come on. Especially after sitting in the driveway overnight.

If I tap in between the lights they come on. sometimes they come on first tap sometimes it takes a few. When I tap one will come on then a couple taps later the other will come on. it's like the lights have a mind of their own.

has anyone experienced this problem? Is it probably just a short up there? Should I just take it apart and see what I see?

That's what I would do. Take it apart, inspect everything, and put it back together. I have had a lot of things start working just by taking them apart and putting them back together. You may also want to take the bulbs out and look at them closely while you tap on them. If you see the filament inside the bulb bobbing around, you might need to change the bulbs.

 

You have an intermittent "open" circuit, not a "short". A short circuit causes blown fuses, smoke, fire, etc.

Most likely a loose or corroded connection.
