1976 About Synthetic Motor Oil

A Popular Science article about the possible future of synthetic motor oil.
Popular Science - Google Books
You can scroll up or down from the oil article, to read about other things of interest in that publication during that time period, that one might find interesting or amusing.
I remember reading this article while on a business trip at the time. The 100K mile Mobil-1 engine test sure peaked my interest in synthetic motor oil for the masses, after encountering synthetic use in Navy jet engines like the J-57 with after burner, of the mid-late 50's.
Took a while for synthetic to make it to the automotive retail market & when it did, they made some too fast claims about how long one could run it, based on dyno tests. The thing they over looked in the dyno tests, was that those engines were always up to temp for their long runs, they never got short cycled in cold weather, or in humid environs, where sludge is formed, so when folks used the synthetics & tried to run them for the advertised 20-25K oci's short tripping around town, they'd find the engine all messed up inside with sludge!!!! Didn't take Mobil & others long to get off the 25K oci advertisement!!!! lol
