40 mph? F6 should have a 2 speed you sure Its not stuck in low range?
Mine hums right along at 55 and I got more to go. Then (with a load)
I hit a hill starts to bog down around 40 I smack it in low range, creast
the hill and back in high again. Somewhere its in print that 6:?? ratio I forgot
comes out to 62MPH at 3200 rpms

Where are you from?

and welcome to FTE .... your source for ford truck info and fun!
I went to Chick's website and my anti-virus won't let me open any of the pages and sets off a warning. Anyone here know why that is happening? I know more about trucks than software.

Hmm. Ford says the top speed of my '50 F6 is 50mph. I haven't got mine on the road yet to say what its actual speed is, so reading your post gives me a little hope. I'm building a 390 to put in it, and even though I have always avoided automatics I have been looking for an automatic combo to help with road speed without swapping out the rear (my left knee is not what it used to be). Although I recently came across an older HD truck 5sp that I am considering (I am going to go look at it on Saturday and see if it will bolt up to my FE bellhousing), it has the parking brake on it but I don't know (yet) which specific transmission it is.

I can attest to the fact that with the same set up as my truck, your top speed is right around 50 MPH.......

From every thing I see, and know about this truck so far, I can say confidently that it does not a a split rear end. I am taking it in to the shop that I have used for a long time to build everything from Diffs to transfer cases and transmissions for me. I will have more definitive answers after that

Im not trying to pull the wool when it comes to the subject of the wheels being modified. I am just going off of what the previous owner told me.....I am actually wondering about switching out drive train, which may cause me to go with a more modern wheel and bolt pattern. What are the thoughts on using a Sterling Rear end??? Also if I do this, what are my options for changing out the bolt pattern on the front axle? Can I simply change the spindles?

I really like this idea for the fact of getting a modern braking system as well

I just opened his site and it's fine. Your anti-virus software is crazy. If you want, just email him at chuck4850@outlook.com. Or call at (203)288-2769. Stu

My understanding is that on these trucks the difference between the F5 and the F6 is the 2sp rear. Maybe someone swapped out the rear sometime in the past? Or maybe I have mis-understood?

I think the 2 speed rear came standard with the F600's but was an option on the F500's.

Yeah, I'm sure it is because I just tried again and it told me there was a trojan embedded in the HTML. I'll send him an email, and look for a new anti-virus.

Get a close up shot of the outside of that rear wheel. They don't look like WMs to me.
