Defroster in 2013 explorer

Today after driving about 200 miles with the defroster on (cold and rainy all day), I was parked in a rest area and the defroster shut itself off and a large amount of steam came out from under the hood.

Temp gauge was normal and the steam stopped so I drove another 100 miles home with no issues.

Has anyone had this happen? Is it normal?

Defrost setting uses the A/C to dehumidify the air. I'm thinking the sealed freon system opened up. Does the A/C still cool?

I will check on my way to work but it's only 35 degrees so I may not be able to tell.

There was an odor after it happened.

Thanks

It might be worthwhile to have your dealership inspect, 55fordv8. Is your defrost still working? How many miles are on the Explorer now?

Hi
It has 20,150 miles.

I just dropped it at the dealer but they seemed baffles by it. I thought I saw a TSB about a fan issue but it was on 2012's not 2013's.

Where it is so new I want to make sure it is fixed right. I will post again once I get info from the dealer.
Thanks

Sounds good, 55fordv8. I'll be here if you need me to step in and assist.

The dealer could not find anything wrong. Said everything was good, no lost antifreeze or leaks.

They had no explanation but did say I was the second person that day with the same complaint.

I will see if it happens again.

Definitely let us know if it does, 55fordv8; I'll be on standby mode until I hear back from you.
