1991 F150 timing issue

I'm new to Fords and I recently bought a 1991 F150. I like to know what any new vehicle I buy is about so I proceeded to put a new cap, rotor, plugs and wires and its runs like crap since. It now has a low rpm miss in od and it has to drop back a gear. I want to check the timing but my Haynes manual says to "unplug the spout". What the heck is a spout? Any other thought as to what might be causing the miss?

My 92 Mustang's the same way. The spout connector's in front of the motor around the distributor, it's usually a black or light gray plug that you pull out, set the timing and then push back in.

Here's a pic I found of what it looks like. Hope this helps you out.

1991 Ford timing

Thanks 1ATony, I saw that little thing, even pulled it out to look at it. Had no idea it had to do with the timing. I'll check soon and will get back to you.

Yup, basically (I'm going from memory) you start the truck, pull that out, adjust the timing, then place that spout connector back while it's running.

When you place the spout connector back in, if you toss the timing light back on it the timing position may look like it's off, but once that spout connector is put in, it retains it.

I used to advance my timing by 10 degrees to do a little drag racing, before I added 10LBS of boost to the stang.

Hope this helps you out,

Tony
