What Consitutes Semi-Synthetic Motor Oil

2014_10 - October 2014 - LNG
Reading through this article, at the end we find there is NO set standard for how much synthetic oil Must be in a semi-synthetic, synthetic blend, part synthetic, ect, ect, for it to carry such a definition. So far its just a marketing mumbo-jumbo term for the mixture!!!!
Its sorta accepted in the industry that it should not be less than 30% of whatever the definition of synthetic is, but isn't written in stone anywhere, could be 10%, so there isn't any set standard for we consumers to go by, in judging what we're getting for our gold outlay, for a semi-synthetic, synthetic blend, part synthetic, ect, ect, motor oil.
I've sorta come to the conclusion that a semi-synthetic that's licensed to meet the Dexos-1 & Fords spec for the viscosity, is likely a good recipe to bet on.
Are full synthetics really all synthetic, not likely according to the article, as some mineral oil is needed to dissolve & hold the ad pack in some synthetic base oils that won't naturally hold them in suspension, so technically some full synthetics really aren't!!!!

So how do we determine what's best for our engine, operated during our drive cycle, in the environment we live in???
Well we could opt for some scheduled UOA's = Used Oil Analysis.
Or maybe search out posted UOA's on engines we have in our equipt, operated in a like environment & drive cycle, to see how wear is going with the lubricant used.
Or trust that the mfgr algorithm for our IOLM is conservative enough to keep us that operate close to, or in the "severe service" regime, out of trouble.
Or if we don't have a IOLM = Intelligent Oil Life Monitor looking out for us, is the owner manual mfgr definition of "severe service", good enough if we follow it????
Maybe an oil that's robust enough to meet Fords latest specifications + Dexos-1, would be a good starting point to consider????
Certainly for most of us, keeping in touch with lubricant forums, or publications can help keep us up to date, but right now, the best way imo is UOA, to know for sure. Some thoughts for pondering. Choose your lubricant & OCI = Oil Change Interval & FCI = Filter Change Interval, wisely.
