Please Weigh In With Advice on Purchase

I am purchasing a truck this week for my 16 year old son. It is much more truck than he needs, even though we live on a 41 acre (non-working) farm. I feel like I can't pass up on this vehicle, even though I realize the gas will be a killer. Please weigh in on any thoughts regarding this. I am removing cash tomorrow and paying $8,500.00 for this vehicle. I think it's too good to not jump on this. We have a verbal agreement and he has removed the listing. If all is as represented... I will purchase. Any input or concerns regarding this vehicle, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Oh... the gentleman pictured is the seller. He had an unfortunate ATV (Razer) accident and lost his left hand. He honestly sounds heartbroken about selling this.

WHY would you put a new 16 year old driver in a truck with 38s and a 460. That is a recipe for DISASTER

Also, that is NOT 10" of lift. Maybe 6"

Good looking truck other than the porno red interior and it is priced right too

I'm with Brad on this one. Too many young kids turned loose with high horsepower fancy rigs wind up being scraped up off the road.

With all due respect, not all kids are the same. Any 2 ton moving object on wheels is a potential killer/threat to everyone. He has learned with lifted trucks and feels more comfortable driving them... as did my oldest son who is now 20 and thank goodness has not had a single accident so far. My kids are home schooled and we are so far in the country that we have to go towards town to hunt. Although this may come off as me being a smart a__, it is not intended that way... I was simply wanting opinions on the truck. I have a separate forum account for parenting advice. I will concede that your concerns are legitimate concerns. Thanks.

Nice truck, but not my cup of tee. A lot of sweat was obviously put into it, a true labor of love. The gas bill would kill almost anyone who is a member of this forum IMHO.

Yes, the gas is a huge huge concern for me. I hate to admit this in a Ford forum, but my Dodge 5.7 kills me as it is, so I can't imagine this 460... but my plan is for him to keep it the next 2-3 years and then when he graduates we will sell.

That's a very nice truck for sure! If your boy wants it and you feel it's a good decision and he/you are able to afford the gas bill than by all means get it! I would be tickled to death to get that nice if a truck as a starter vehicle. Kudos to you for being an awesome dad not that mine wasn't awesome lol!

But on another note... Would it be worth the time and memories for you to buy a rust free/Needs a paint job truck that you and him can fix up together..? It could be a very good learning expirence for both of you.

He's going to need 2-3 part time jobs to fill the tank

I would love to see some examples. I have stopped at every used car lot and surfed the internet relentlessly for the last 3 weeks. The trucks I have found in that price range are pushing 180,000 miles or more and don't really look as nice. If you run across examples, link them and I will check them out. Thanks

LOL I wish I had the time for that. With 41 acres and a full time job that has me traveling 5 states, I would be lucky to get the body sanded in 3 months. I grew up without a dad and everything I learned about fixing cars I had to learn on my own as an adult. I am most impressed with the LOW miles on this truck and the fact that it is in almost as good condition as a new one. In fact it's in better condition than full size trucks from the last 5 years that I've looked at.

That is a nice truck but you have to know it's not just going to be hard on gas.. it's going to be... "sweet mother of xxxxxxxx.. what the xxxx" hard on gas. And it's probably the cleanest 1988 truck I have seen in a long time but I think you're paying too much for it.

It's a really nice looking clean truck. Looks like the PO put a lot of time and money into it. But as you know these 460's are thirsty.

Bought my first(and only) truck at 18 with a 460 and it is still my daily driver 4 years later. I get about 10 mpg and I have 31" tires, so you can probably expect less with the 38's.

Congrats on the purchase.

That is why I wanted to post this to Ford guys on here. I've had 90% of the people I've talked to in my circles say that this was an amazing deal. They are of course basing that on the condition and LOW original miles. The gentleman selling the truck confided in me that he paid $11,000 for it 3 years ago. I would not have considered paying that much for it. Unless I'm wrong, the researched value that I could get on an "excellent" 1988 F350 was approximately 7,500. So this one being pristine and low miles I thought was fair at 8,500. I love getting this feedback from you guys. It's why I posted it. Thanks
