hello there. I have an idea of converting my 4 speed manual transmisison over to a 5 speed manual transmission.

Is this possible?
What type of transmission would/should i get as a replacement?
Any other options available to me?

You've got a couple of options:

A ZF 5-speed from a more recent truck. I don't know if it will fit your t'case or not. I think so, but I'm not sure. This is a good strong box. Granny 1st, OD 5th. The downside is that you need to convert to a hydraulic clutch since the ZF has an integral bellhousing and comes set up that way. ZFs are usually expensive, especially the 4WD versions.

The other viable option might be a Ranger OD box from AdvanceAdaptors. It fits in front of your existing tranny, uses your existing clutch and bellhousing and gives a 27% OD in all 4 gears. It ain't cheap either.

 

The ZF is a bolt in using stock mechanical clutch linkage. There is a post here detailing how to install ZF into 78/79 4x4 around December 01 in the 73-79 truck forum.

why is it, when i search for something I have trouble finding information, but others can. Thanks for not making me feel like a dumb ace and providing me with that post.

I will check it out the post.... the swap requires alot of work, bit i am sure well worth it.

Has anyone else attempted this swap and ran into any other problems?

 

can the ZF be retrofited into a 1960 F100 4wd? I have a std. 4spd. unit now, with 4wd.
