Help for friends Grandfather car

I am Ford Ranger man trying to help an old man I met this week. Went with my best friend to pick up his new Super Duty and also visit his Grandfather in Easter Washington. The new 2014 F30 is wonderful. His Grandfathers Ford / Mercury Escort Wagon had the timing belt break and a local shop replaced it, ran good for two days then started loping. When cold it starts and runs great in about 2 min it comes off of cold loop and then starts loping from fast idle to all most off. (never seen a motor RPM drop so low and not stop) when you put it in gear it runs, we did not drive it but Grandfather said it drove home ok just started not idling when in neutral or park.
Can you point me in a direction?
Thanks FTE Team
Bob

i know this might sound crazy,, but my daughters taurus done the same thing in neutral or park would almost die idle was down then come back up.... i ask a ford mechanic at the dealership and he told me to unhook the battery and let it sit 20 minutes then hook battery back up and start it up and let it run for a while to reset ecm,,,, well we did that and it fixed the problem even her tranmission started shifting smoother..... hope it helps ya..

Or the shop let the noob put the last bits together...go under the hood and make sure all the sensors you see (can find) are plugged up right and tight, check all the air intake hoses/clamps for tight. Sounds like it's sucking air through a big vacuum leak...my Ranger was doing this and I found a big rotted hole in the air tube that runs from the air cleaner box to the intake...right behind the intake clamp, on the bottom of the hose/tube...discovered it by accident running my hand under there while snugging up the hose to clamp it tight. I've even heard of dishonest shops intentionally leaving something unplugged, or clamp loose so the unsuspecting owner brings it back in and spends more $$$...let's hope Gramps was not vitimized by this.

He did not feel it was something they did he drove it for two days after the replacement of the timing belt and reported no issues. Drove over to check on relatives than on a trip and when he started the car it loped in park or neutral.
Thanks

Still wouldn't hurt to check everything under the hood...always a good idea after others work on your vehicle.
