Adios 6.0

Just sold my 6.0. Good riddance! What i've learned is the 6.0 is not a tow beast. The few times I towed with it, I was so focused on watching my CTS insight that I almost track of the road. 243degree oil and 229 degree coolant. That just pathetic. Climbing a 7-8 percent grade at 30mph because I was *** clinched scared to push it seeing those temps!

I still have my 7.3 excursion but i'm picking up a 2nd or 3rd gen Dodge cummins for tow duty. No more watching senseless oil temps. I love Fords but they never should have released the 6.0. Maybe in an SUV but not their flagship Super Duties. I love the super duty bodies but have such a sour taste in my mouth with the 6.0. Never again. From now on all I'm gonna need to really watch is EGT and maybe fuel pressure. So stoked and relieved to have a pinless grenade out of my possession.

Sorry fellas. You guys have been great but I felt the need to post for anyone else that has been on the fence. Jump ship if you can.

The 6.0 requires 2 things, common sense and a little mechanical know how to operate dependably. Either or both can be substituted with large quantities of cash. Enjoy your Dodge.

all it probably needed was a proper coolant flush and maybe a new oil cooler
Somebody probably got a good deal on it.

Agreed, you obviously didn't do your homework. I just did an oil cooler job 2 weeks ago on a truck and it wasn't as hard as everyone makes it out to be.

I bought my truck with a clogged oil cooler, leaking EGR cooler, limped it 700 miles home, had Powerstroke Enginuities work their magic and now I just drive the **** out of it. It is the epitome of a well tuned and well built Tow Monster!

It was good of you to give someone else a good deal on your 6.0. I'm sure they appreciated it.

I opted for large quantities of cash, since I can't do my own work and very happy with my 6.0.

A temp difference of 14 towing up a 7-8% grade sounds fairly healthy to me. Maybe the thing needed a good coolant flush but that's probably it.

Im betting any diesels oil temp would get that high towing a grade like that, including your old trusty 7.3

haha, why are you guys getting so butt hurt?! I did say thank you. Do I need a high post count to matter? This site is a WEALTH of information if you do your searching right!

What you guys don't get is, WHY? WHY should I have to change an oil cooler and FLUSH more than normal? Why? Screw that.... I need reliability. Why should I need to cringe when I get a 15+ degree delta? I see guys on here that have changed their oil coolers 3 times!?! Why should I keep on keepin on with that kind of drama? Why do I need to do an EGR delete or a bulletproof and spend thousands of dollars to make a crappy design reliable? Why do I need to remove my cab to head stud my motor? Why?

Sorry fellas.... If you don't see my logic, you probably never will. My 7.3, I don't need to worry about all that noise....

You did the right thing. At some point you have to cut your losses and that time was met for that truck. Lots of us haven't got there yet and still happy with the reliability of ours... to this point. Mine starts taking a dump, I may change my mind, but I've always been a Ford man, I'd do another.

Good luck with the Dodge, have a few buddies with them, they love'em.

I guess I've never really had any problems that made me watch it like you have in the 9 years I've had mine.
A couple of weeks ago I was pulling my loaded 30ft toy hauler up a 6% grade with a temp difference of 11°. I decided to lay into the throttle to see how much of a spread I could get and it didn't change. The ambient temp was 94° my coolant reached 221° and the oil was 232°. My speed dropped to about 53mph and I was holding 28# of boost for probably 3 minutes.

My truck weighs in at 12k lbs every day and have been at a GCVW of 23k lbs very often with no problems.
My truck is a towing monster with the 4.10's she has !!!!
It sounds to me you did not have the right gearing setup for the load you were trying to tow.

I love my 6.0.
