looking at buying a ln7000 input

I am looking at 3 different ln7000 each are pretty close except for engines

1 has a cummins non turbo 1971 model tri axle 13 speed

2 has a 3208 cat non turbo with a 9 speed 1979

3 has a Detroit and a 9 speed 1979

what are the good and the bad and could I pick up a cab chassis with a cummins turbo and switch them over get a mid 90's

For what it is worth -

I am not a big fan of the 3208's, they do not have liners, so rebuilding is not done in frame as a rule. Installing a turbo is also out, the turbo CAT 3208 actually use a different block! The CAT 3116 is also the same, no liners. Defiantly medium duty engines that many consider throwaway engines.

As to the Detroit, if it is a 8.2 then they also have a somewhat checked reputation as quite a few of them failed early as well. If it is the older Detroit 2 stroke, well then those diesels starting in 1939 built the world so to speak (along with the EMD two stroke diesels), but they are now long in the tooth, and not something you see too much.

In my opinion, the absolutely best medium duty drivetrain that was available from Ford is the 8.3 Cummins backed up by the 6 speed Allison. It will pretty much do everything needed. There are also quite a few of the 5.9 (probably many more than the 8.3) but they can be doggy with a loaded truck / with a trailer as well.

Of course this is depending upon your expectations, I drive a C600 at up to 35k or sometimes a bit more with a little 330 gas, and to most people it would be considered way doggy, but it just moves the loads, day in and day out without breaking. So I accelerate sloooowly, and drop down to single digits on steep secondary road hills, I just try to stay out of peoples way and go about what the truck is capable of, and that is moving loads, day in and day out, without breaking.

But not everyone has that mind set, some people really get upset if they have to slow down for hills.

Food for thought
