That's the brotherhood for you: We have a member crossing the country on a marathon run with a heavy load, and he's taking the time to help a brother out. Ya gotta love this group. Thanks brother!

If we don't look out for eachother nobody will!
Ok, 37 miles of eastern Nevada on I80 is no joke. Just pulled my second hill in second gear.
I'm at the top letting my truck recover.
My carrier bearing is reading 121* and my diff is 150* ambient is around 60-65*

I'll check again at my next stop.

This driveline is "driving" me crazy. While 30 degrees difference is not the end of the world, I'm empty and running 50 degrees hotter than before. This makes no sense.

You still have the shim in?

You're sure you got the right bearing installed? There's about 15,000 options for the center carrier bearing, more than one person has put the wrong one in.

Sometimes a new bearing has just a bit too much grease in it, which will cause it to run hot.

Well crud - I don't trust my carrier bearing right now. I hate re-work, but I hate dud Buck$Zooka rounds under the truck even more.

Rich I was wondering if you have checked the slip joint splines? Have you checked the grease? Do you see any signs of wear on the splines? I have seen where the splines in slip joint hang up and things will hang up every now and then and it feels like a carrier bearing. That and when was the last time you checked the rear diff outer axle bearing for end play and adjust?

100 deg today when I got home and the hottest part of the carrier I could get a reading on was 122.6 121 seemed about the average temp. Looks like you've got some issues.

I took the shim out after it was a fail.

The whole rear end is new, and riding about 145 degrees.

The driveline is rebuilt and trued - and balanced two more times in search of this issue. I have oily stuff spinning out and splattering the mount for the carrier bearing - it's just a thin coat, but it's unnerving. I never get down to 120 degrees F (75 degrees ambient today), and I used to see closer to 100 degrees.

I tried to rep you Frank and Brad, but I have to spread them.

Tugly I hope you have warranty Dudzooka round to do a defective exchange on the carrier. LOL

You could always ratchet strap yourself under the truck, have the Wife go for a couple mile spin in stinky.

I think I hurt me wife's feeling when I had a friend come over to drive mine in the driveway. I was underneath on a creeper. LOL

She said WHAT! YOU DON"T TRUST ME? LOL

I says I cant hear ya honey, your hair looks great!

That reminds me Ed... The last time I changed my carrier and u-joints I tore my slip shaft boot, and ford didn't have it in stock. That was two years ago...
I have a quart of the special blue ford slip shaft grease in my toolbox. I need to order that dang boot.
Rich, I used a Timken carrier bearing. They make good stuff.

The connection between slip joint hanging up and carrier bearing failure is not a coincidence. There is a lot of force that can be exerted on the carrier bearing by the slip joint. The carrier is not designed for that extreme side load. I helped a friend rebuild his converted school bus driveline after the slip joint got rusty. We had to tear apart the differential as well because the bus tried to pole vault when the driveline hit the dirt road. We installed a "sling" under that long driveline after all the work was done. No more jumpin'!
