Anyone ? 351M swap 5.4L I'm doing it !
I have a 78 F150 4X4 short bed. I just bought a 2002 FX4 5.4L w/112,900 miles. The 02 has a light hit on the front pass side. I have have been reading up on this swap as much as I can. This is where I'm at right now with what I'm told.
1. Use the 02 wiring harness (from bumper to bumper) to include the cluster and might have to use the steering column.
2. I have a programmer on order that will delete the security codes.
3. The 02 trans will bolt to my 78 205 transfer case.
4. I plan to use the 02 rear end with the speed sensor and sell the 9".
5. A/C compressor delete pulley for now. My 78 has no A/C.
6. I plan to use the 02 in-tank fuel pump. May buy a new 78 fuel tank & cut/weld the mounting ring section from the 02 to the 78 and add a dump if needed.
Anyone know if there is any type of "kit" for this swap ? Motor mounts ?
I have a good running 351M with headers, Holy Carb, Auto Trans (NO T-Case), starter, alt, ready to drop in and run for $650.00 in South MS. Also a 9" rear end.

Nice! This was the swap I was planning on doing before I came across my Hemi drivetrain. I look forward to seeing the progress on this. As for motor mounts and things for that engine, it'll be hard to find something to fit your truck. Your best bet is going to be a welder and a plethora of other tools. I love these resto mod builds and i will definitely be watching this one.

As for the security codes I've used sniper tuning software. I like the user friendly approach it has. I used it on my 2000 Mustang when I needed to swap an ecu. I didn't have time to get it to a dealer to reprogram the PATS. So I used the software and disabled it. If your gonna use the existing 02 harness, ecu, gauge cluster and the key then you might not have to disable it after all.

my 2 cents im doing a similar project 4.6 4v with a 5 speed in a 77
anyway use a 87-96 fuel tank if your using the newer cluster and an 86 tank if u use the original cluster both will fit in the factory location and have fuel pumps in them ( assuming the 02 still had a return system pretty sure it did )
and 2nd use an 87-96 rear axle with the abs sensor so you can keep same lug pattern on front and back

THAKKS ALL !
There is a "you pull it" (self serve junk yard) just down the road from my house and I'll have to go see if I can find that fuel tank & rear end. I asked a friend just the other day if the bolt pattern had changed the way they did on the F250s & up. He didn't know either. But that was one of the things I knew I needed to look into.

Do I need to use photobucket to post pictures ?

As for the "Is there a kit?" question, if there was it would probably have a bowtie on the grille
Looking forward to following your project and wish you luck, may your fabrication skills and patients be plentiful.

It's slow going but today I was able to spend a few hours labeling every plug on the 02 wiring harness. I have the dash harness out. The harness the goes to the doors and the harness for the head lights. Talk about miles of wires. The dash harness alone has more wires than all of the wires in the 78.

If the 02 trans is automatic you'll have clearance issues with the 205...........

So you would use the stock t-case from the 02 ?
I think my 02 has a different trans than the one in your pictures.
Mine is tapered on both sides on the tail end.
Can you PM me a phone number I would like to ask some questions.

I think the 205 is a much better transfer case and the 02 has a slip yoke. I plan on keeping the 205 in the same location because of the 4X4 shifter and drive shafts.
It's my plan. I hope it will work. I'm still hoping the 205 will bolt up to the 02 transmission as I'm told it will. I'm shooting from the hip. I'll take any tips advise and susjestions. I have talked this over with a few friends who are smarter than I am when it comes to this. We don't know anyone who has done this swap befor. That's about all I know right now.
And I know I'm doing it.

i do know that you will have to grind a notch in the rear flange of the trans to clear the shift rod on the 205 ive already done that on my 5 speed and from what ive read none of the newer trans have the cut out .
also when u get ready to put things together ill get some pics of my mounts the notch etc if u want just to give you a few ideas

I pulling the 02 apart slowly with my label machine labeling every wire and plug. I should be removing the body off the frame in the next week or so.
My 78 runs and drives fine so I'm trying to sell the motor and trans running in the truck.
