Fuel pump return cap? Please help!

I noticed there is caps on all the fittings on my new in tank pump to keep out dust. There is a cap on what I think is the return tube with a clamp so I took it off thinking it was a dust cap for shipping. Well I just noticed my old one has this cap too. If it's capped, how can it return fuel to the tank? It's the tube that comes out of the sending unit. Or am I missing something? Please help because I need my truck tomorrow!

That ain't a cap, look at it closer. It's split on the end so fuel can come out.

No idea why it's there, but remember, manufacturers generally try and pinch pennies when it comes to materials. So if it's on there then you can bet somebody, somewhere, said YES we actually *do* need this thing here even though it costs an extra $0.05.

Whether or not them guys always have the RIGHT idea or the BEST design is another topic.

I guess I'll throw it back on. I got the tank installed and was about to fire it up when I noticed it. Now I gotta take it out again
