Sounds like a Irish car bomb. Guiness beer and Jameson whiskey with Baileys Irish cream.

That's the one that's what killed my stomach last time I went drinking with my friend. Explosive vomit in my step dad's car. I haven't had more than a beer and maybe 1 drink at home since.

Also, got me a new hoopdie.

Specs: 1998 F150, 2wd, Auto, Ext. Cab, Long bed, 4.2 6er that's a little I'll with a cooling issue. I snagged it for $1000 from a friend, he and his family weren't doing anything with it and the last time I had looked into it was a year ago. Which was also the last time it ran aside from yesterday. It's got a few issues that I hope are simple.

Not a bad truck. Hopefully more reliable than your other Green Fords.

What's the cooling issue? If anything stick with motorcraft parts. Horizon Ford in olympia has a website with pretty good deals.

Well, basically at idle the temp is fine and normal but when you drive it, it shoots up and eventually hits red. But at idle in park, it can run for a while without concern.
the PO was thinking head gasket but there is no burning coolant smell in the exhaust, and it runs nice and smooth.

I haven't had time to try looking at the oil, and a few other things but I feel pretty confident that it's not a head gasket. I have been thinking it's the thermostat.

There is another issue as well, it idles fine and in drive or reverse it runs fine but when I take off it will start to go, then the engine dies off. If I don't give it enough gas it will just die. The fuel is over a year old and there was less than a quarter tank, we put about 2 gallons of good fuel in to get it started, then I put $20 worth of premium in along with a bottle of HEET in hopes that it was just stale gas. Since I did that I haven't driven it to find out since I'm still at work, but this morning I should be able to tell driving home.

There was an issue, that may or may not have caused problems for me. Um, well, when we were trying to get it started, it wouldn't fire SO I used a can of starting fluid while my buddy cranked it. It would start to spin faster but never took off, then backfired through the intake, into the air filter can that I had open. In the end, there was a small fire, and the filter got a tiny bit burnt, BUT I'm wondering if the backfire maybe cause something to change and is making it die like this. It was a mistake on my part but I figured it worked with my bronco, and I've heard of people using starting fluid on EFI motors, it should work there.

Thermostat sounds like it may be stuck. While idling the small bypass is allowing enough flow, but not while cruising. May have to put some new coolant in at the same time. Air filters are not to expensive. I picked up a Motorcraft for like $15 at Horizonpartsguy.com for my V10. Used it to replace the K&N I had.

I got the airfilter, Motorcraft, and changed the fuel filter and battery. The drive issue is still there. As for the coolant, I has hoped it was the T-stat, but I'm not sure. The heater blows nice and hot when the temps goes up a bit. It is still worth a shot I guess.

Very easy to check it. Take it out and drop in boiling water.
Does it open? If not then there is you problem.

Also check the IAC motor. They can stick and let too much
air in and lean you out too much.

It's not checking the T-stat I'm worried about, it's getting to it. There is a lot of crap in the way with these newer vehicles...

Feel like posting a photo of the engine compartment and where
the T-stat is buried?

Will do when I get home. Or at lunch.

In other news, what do you guys think about this little scanner?

It isn't real fancy but I think it would get the job done well enough. I saw one at HF for a little more, I'd like to stay under $100 if I can.

Well that link won't work unless I put in some info.
But my feelings are toss it back into the trash can.
Save the $ go get the same junk at Harbor Freight.
They are not setup for ford specific pid. You have a smartphone
pick up one of the ELM readers on Ebay and a few $ for the
app that you like and your good. OBD2 right?

Yeah OBD2. The issue with buying off eBay is either waiting for shipping or paying out the **** to get it quick. If I can go to a store and pick it up in the next few days that would be better. I'll check into this app and ELM thing, it sounds kinda neat.

EDIT: bit the bullet and got an $18 Bluetooth one. It's compatible with android. It's by Torque I think. It won't be here for a little bit but even if I figure out the issue before it arrives, that will also help monitor the coolant temps.

That is one of the things we use them for with the 6.0s.
