Well the factory alternator is shot.........

After only 290,436 miles, the factory alternator is no longer alternating.

Just don't make things like they used to.

I already have a 6.0 alternator sitting on the shelf that I purchased on Ebay a few years ago.

Love the OEM alternators on these things. Mine lasted 333500 miles before it tanked. The rebuild shop said all but one diode was shot. It sure hung in there for a while....still was charging when the RPMs went above idle. Now that unit is professionally rebuilt and packaged in a box in my garage waiting for the call to duty. Could be a decade or more...

are the 6.0 and 7.3 alternators similar.. can a 6 be used on 7.3 and is the 6.0 better for some reason.

thanks.

6.0L makes a higher output alternator for some of there trucks so some guys convert. You have to clock the case but they bolt in.

Just my luck - the alternator on my Ex went out yesterday. But I am thankful that it went out at home and not on the road trip to Denver or to Schied's in Indiana.

Which alternator do you guys recommend I go with?

I put a 185 DC alternator on my sons and it works great. But if you got good service out of yours go back with the same or have it rebuilt. I had one go out under 100K on the road so I put the same one back in. Only because I was on the road. I'd step it up pass the 110 that comes with it if I were to do it again.

The new alternator cured intermittent miss on cylinder #4 I have been chasing all summer, rough running at start and black smoke under acceleration that's been stressing me out.

These engines need their electricity.

You drove to Denver and couldn't fit a pass through western Nebraska to say hi going or coming?

I'm hurt, buff.

The alternator I had for the 6.0 van didn't need to be clocked.

You do have to remove a little material from the bottom of the alternator case or the top of the alternator mount to make either one fit, though.

Man, this is so similar to what I experienced...... some rough idle on startup and black smoke on acceleration in tunes (economy & tow) that didn't smoke previously. I kept looking for a darn boost leak. Then when I hooked up A&E I saw the voltage looked low......
