7.3 IDI N/A to Turbo questions

I have an 89 F250 with a 7.3 IDI my father bought the truck this engine was in new in 89. It has well over 300,000 miles but was well maintained. I recently installed an ATS 088 turbo and only turned my ip up two flats. Im getting what seems to me to be alot of black smoke but the highest i have seen my egts is 1050 and my boost is only pushing 6lbs. My question is if my timing is to far advanced, when I installed my ip and injectors I timed by ear so I get a little clatter with the cold advance on and it smooths out when its off. None of the shops around here have a timing light or would know how to use it with this truck. My father might have had one around here but I havent found it yet. Does the timing seem like its off or is this fine like I said it just seems to be pouring out my smoke than I would like but I need the power for pulling a camper and various other things around the farm.

the problem with EGT's like that when running empty,is that you can't just use the truck to haul/tow without monitoring the gauge like a hawk.it can be very dangerous.
the problem with having it bellow black smoke is,your wasting fuel that's simply going out the pipe rather than burning and putting that energy into forward motion of the truck.with these insane fuel prices, you don't want any of that.
over on oilburners.net there is a member named: icanfixall (Gary is his name.)
who rents timing meters for these trucks.you want 7-8 BTDC via the pulse method for turbocharged idi's.

ideally the ip and injectors will get swapped out every 100k miles as they are medium ware items.

Those egts are under heavy load and the pump has about 3000 miles on it cruising I only see egts at around 700 and the ats manual states three flats on the pump. I understand that smoke is wasted fuel that is why I'm questioning the timing. I have no issues retarding it and test driving for a tank. But I thought someone else would have an idea I can accelerate without it smoking I just think it's a lot of smoke wen I get on it. Later if I can post a vid of it.

**update**
I took a trip to the va in salt lake city (236 miles). I had a fuel filter problem but once that was fixed I was able to accelerate without any smoke, once at wot I was boostinjg 6lbs and 1100 egts with little smoke.
