460 out of a 96 f700??

was blessed with a FREE 460 efi from a 96 f700 from the hot rod shop i work at. was wondering what my fellow ford fans know about this engine? the only thing performance wise i know is it has an rpm limiter cam in it. wondering if you would keep the efi although there are ALOT less choices of performance parts and having to tune it.

NOT a 460. But it is a 429 EFI
They never put the 460 in the medium duty tuck for what ever reason

Also the crank shaft has a longer snout for the accessories.

it is no prize you got there. if anything it is going to cause you lots of headaches

Could be a 370. They look identical. I had an f700 box truck with one.
I never heard of a rev limitng cam. I know a cam can be designed for a certain power range, but not for a max potential rpm. The truck it came out of had a mechanical rev limiter more than likely. It would push the pedal back at you (was spring loaded so you could hold it to the floor and it would only rev it to like 4k, but it wasn't electronically limited so if it lugged down you still had full power)
But it does have bigger accessory drive on it. It may not be compatible with light truck accessories.

hm i guess thats what i was told about the cam. The only accessory i would really like is power steering and A/C which it has on it now. I am taking the air compressor, air injection system and all the other crap off and possibly moving the alternator to the top of the engine if i can. what problems will i have if i run the accessories that are on it right now?

I would think all the accessories will work just fine. Getting them "plumbed" to the truck may be another issue. Not undoable, just not plug-and-play.

Are the engine mounts the same? What about bellhousing bolt patterns? Just curious.

"RPM Limiting Cam" likely means there is some kind of governor drive that's hooked up to the throttle linkage somehow.

Block is the same. You'll be able to bolt on the correct isolators. I don't remember but the heavy truck may use a front engine mount, like under the timing cover, but I can't remember. Bellhousing is also the same.

Taylor, please add a signature. It helps us know who/what we are dealing with.

I'm sure it will all fit in the truck, but as you noticed, accessories are different. Take the time to measure stuff on this engine you have, then go to junkyard and measure an efi 460. You also need to determine what this engine really is. There may be a sticker on valve cover.

well the engine is actually going into a 79 f150. i didnt realize there was a section for the 460 on this site so if it has to be moved than i am fine with that. i posted it on this section beings the engine is a 96.
I will find out exactly what it is on monday when i get back to the shop. if the sticker is not on the valve cover where is some coding i could look at? or is there differences i can see to figure if it is one engine or another? like 429/460 compared to the 370 previously mentioned?

I'd keep that air compressor just because it's real nice to have air sometimes.

370/429/460 look identical. Maybe get the head casting number or if the truck it was in is still available to look at. Or measure stroke through a spark plug hole. That way you can tell if it's a 370/429 or a 460.

You're putting this into a 79, but are you planning on keeping the efi or going to a carb. The efi heads are different and a carb intake won't fit.

that was one of my other questions. i would like to keep it efi for ease of start and mileage but i dont have the computer for it. and if i ever want to put a new cam in it or something id have to spend money to get it tuned. would it be worth the troubles?

If you're fine with sd, then you can use any truck v8 wire harness, then get the computer that matches the displacement of the engine.
You never said if you still have access to the truck the engine is from. If so just grab the computer.
When you decide to swap cams, either get an efi friendly one, or get the tuning software. Or get a painless wire harness and mustang computer, then get a chip made or get it tuned.
