I have an extracted T18 transmission and it appears to be stuck in gear, preventing the Shift Control Housing (top part of trans.) from being removed. Would pulling the shifter help me remove that top plate? As it is I can get that plate lifted about an inch while I notice the in/output shafts turn, which leaves me to believe it's stuck in gear.

 

Suggest unscrew the shift lever retainer and may shed some light on the problem??

Having a problem locating the 'how to article' on rebuilding the T-18 so ran an FTE search and found a number of threads on subject.

Yep, a local shop owner that I'm friends with whom formerly worked at the local Ford dealership was full of info and he did unscrew the shifter boss and removed the locking pin. (That he immediatly put in a plastic bag) and peering down the hole, he said "I'll be right back with a big screwdriver" 5 seconds of prodding the shift rails into alignment and 'wha-la' clear and now I can at last fully remove the Shift Control Housing.
