Hellwig sway bar and airbags?
#31
We pick up a new 30' camper on Saturday, I will be pulling it home without load leveling and sway control because I have a ProPride I am installing on it. Towing without any assistance will give me a good baseline and once the ProPride is installed I will have another baseline.
It all comes down to what am I going to spend money on first. Since the truck is basically all stock I am looking at engine and suspension upgrades.
Our goal is a trip to the Grand Canyon via Colorado in the spring. Thanks for the advice!

Once you have pulled with a ProPride you will never go back to the old set up.
I have a 24' car hauler, with car inside it weighs close to 9000 lbs. I have used weight distribution before but the Ex sat down in the back and handled poorly. We took a trip to Nashville and the trailer swayed around trucks. I studied how to make the safest towing rig and the ProPride is the best thing I found. It is weight distribution and anti sway, the thing does not sway at all. I am transferring the hitch to the camper since I rarely use the hauler now. I bought it to keep it for a long time. $2500 is super expensive but I feel it was worth it. I am interested to see if I will need air bags after the hitch is installed.

Simple answer is that with that type hitch the trailer CAN NOT SWAY at all, period. I run with a Hensley Arrow, basically the same type hitch as the Pro Pride, they are known as Pivot Point Projection hitches. Using a set of pivoting trapaziodally (sp?) aligned plates with spindles and bearings they transfer or project the pivoting action of the hitch forward from the ball to almost the rear axle, thus eliminating the possibility of sway. I know it sounds goofy and my explanation may not be the best but they do work. I have towed with other good and not so good WD hitches and they simply don't compare to my Hensley Arrow. I pull a 41' long 12' tall 11k travel trailer with my EX and it pulls great in all situations, cross winds and semis don't induce any bad manners at all, the entire rig feels like a straight bodied truck vs a truck and trailer. I have "stress tested" it in winds as high as 70MPH gusts while running at 60MPH (wasn't fun) and it tracked true with no sway, got pushed around some but as a single unit.
I found my hitch on craigslist for $650 used and I refurbished it myself. And I will not pull a large bumper pull trailer without this type hitch after feeling the difference.
