tachometer not working in 91 diesel

Hi all,

I'm looking to get a extended cab 4x4 truck to replace my 2wd reg cab. Found one that is just what I want, except it has a few issues I want to figure out before committing to buy. The one I don't understand is the tachometer works, but it's nowhere near accurate. Like it says 500rpm when doing 40mph in 4th, and it doesn't seem to "sweep" much when accelerating, I don't think I was ever able to get it over maybe 1200rpm on the test drive.

What could cause this sort of problem?

Has lots of other little issues, but most were things that sort of made sense and I think I can fix without too many problems.

Thanks!

Sounds like a faulty diesel sensor or loose mounting or electrical connection.........

could be a bad sensor in the timing cover, or a bad gauge in the dash.

all sound like probable causes... what's the worst case from a cost/labor standpoint. Would probably fix myself.

I'm kind of leaning against this truck as it just needs a lot of little things, and I'm short on time, plus it's 3.55 gears, and didn't have the get up my 4.10 truck has..

It's a two-minute fix -----------most of the time it's loose, dirty ----right there in the injection pump timing gear cover....10-20 ft lbs
