5.4's are for sissies
I got an oil change about a week ago and when I was checking out the paperwork on my drive away I saw that they had listed my engine as "5.4"...
It was a strange emotion, lol. A little angry, a little insulted... weird experience.
(No offense to my 5.4L friends who may read this)

most of the 5.4 guys would say V10's are for people that need to compensate for a "small man unit"
each engine has it's good points and it's weak points.
a 5.4 is great for fuel mileage in a daily driver, and is a good transplant into a crown vic.
a V10 is great for sucking up gas, and moving loads around.
personally, i would love to find a few V10's. i would put one in the 65 falcon 2dr HT, the other in the 99 P71 crown vic.

I feel ya. It's a V10 not some silly 8 cylinder. Ha!
I don't really care what motor someone has but I didnt lose much in terms of mpg going from an ext cab long bed 4x4 5.4 to a crew cab dually V10.
11.5 vs 10-10.5 for similar highway/mixed trips and similar towing mpg with the V10 just doing all of it better and ultimately more fun. Both 3V versions.
If you're just a highway cruiser then sure you probably get better overall mpg. But the fun factor of the V10 more than makes up for the lost mpg. It's just better plain and simple. I used to make all the 5.4 excuses until I bought the latest truck. Hooked to a heavy load (within rated capacity) I hated that 5.4.
I will say that the 3V 5.4 in the F150 was a lot of fun. Mainly because the truck weighed much less giving it more pep.
God help me if I ever test drive a 6.7...... although I really don't feeling like monitoring all the maintenance, fuel, def, etc... I know it's easy but I like only worrying about when the next oil change is.

Are you Sure?????
I use to think the 4.6 & 5.4 were wimpy engines. until I bought a 99 Crown Vic P71 with a 4.6. Now I have a whole new outlook on them, the 4.6 anyway. I'm impressed with it speed & performance. It gets up & runs way better than I ever thought they could. It will run 80+ mph all day long & still get about 17-18 mpg. I ran it 450 miles pretty much non stop like that it never broke a sweat.

And this "sissy" has changed enough oil in the last 20years to allow retirement from such a menial task.
Especially when comparing the time/money aspect of it. Yes, I could probably save $10-15 if I did it myself. But then I have to DO the work (15-20min), dispose of the oil properly (another 15-20min round trip to auto parts store); and in the process get my hands and clothes dirty.
And I'd have to fit it into my 65hour workweek.
10-12 times per year...
My time is much more valuable than that.

What do you mean "are you sure????"
Also just to be clear: I'm not hating on the 5.4 or 4.6--- it's just that when a person has a 6.8 V10, it's a little insulting for a mechanic to write 5.4.
That's all!
And even so: the point is facetious. All in good fun. For goodness sake: I posted it in the V10 section of this forum- I fully expected support, not opposition.

My V10 E350 gets 11.5-13mpg on the same routes, and nearly 14 on the same low speed long drives.
Ok in full honesty I almost forgot to mention- with the V10 van I usually don't exceed 65mph, whereas I'd happily go 70-75mph with the V6.

my 99 P71 has just enough power to make it run like a raped ape.
but not enough power to break things.
and i like having too much power.
that is why i want to drop a V-10 in the p71.

There is the room & with 4R70 trans it should be a fairly straight forward swap. I gave up on wanting to break things. It get too expensive. When I want to see things break I take a trip to the The Strip in Las Vegas. I have a buddy who's boy bracket races & there is plenty of breaking done in a day to remind me why I don't do that anymore.

I thought that too, until I had a 7.3 diesel and contemplated where to drain 15+ quarts to....
Since then I am glad to pay $20-30 to someone to do what I would spend a while doing and cleaning up at home.
I agree. I was surprisingly pleased with the 4.6 I had in my expedition, but having the V10 in my SuperDuty boosts the testosterone significantly.
