Just about to do my 1st oil change on my 2013 van with the 5.4 V8. I was

the factory recommended weight is what you should use, on a new 5.4 that would be 5w20 i believe. I personally like to use Mobile 1 full synthetic and motorcraft filters.

I'm wondering if there are any hard facts that synthetic is better. It's been controversial and infested with bias claims for many years. Not talking about the obvious heat range advantage.

It seems to bounce from 20 to 30 depending on the year and where you look.

That engine has cam phasers, stay at the proper weight. Motorcraft SynBlend is a great oil and not too expensive. I do run mobil 1 in my Excursion, as it tends to sit more.

I don't think the vans came with 3v motors.

I thought by 2013, they all were? I guess not. That didn't make much sense on Ford's part to keep producing that engine for just the one chassis...

I'm wondering if there is any way one could argue that conventional oil is better than synthetic oil.

I use Amsoil 5w40. I buy the DEO Premium Diesel 5w40 because I own a semi, but it also meets the SN rating for gas engines. It is in a Cat C-15, a 3.4L V6 Impala and our 6.8L V10 Excursion.

My 2 cents. Weight should be determined by where you live colder cilmates verses warmer climates. And I love Castrol And Valvoline they both have semi synthetic. Good luck!
