1965 F100 VIN problems. Any help would be appreciated!
So I purchased a '65 F100 from a nice family, and everything seemed on the up and up. The truck has a clear title, and has been recently registered. Well, the truck sat in the garage for a while, and I recently pulled it out and realized the VIN on the frame and the door don't match the VIN on the title and registration papers. The VIN on the door is F10JL649174 which matches the specs of the truck. The VIN on the title and registration is F100129P6, which isn't even a proper VIN for these trucks, I have no idea where they got that number. The only thing I can see that matches the truck is the 129 denotes the wheel base, I'm not sure where the P6 is from.
Does anybody have any idea where the shorter number came from? Do you think when they registered and switched the title over and nobody at the DMV noticed it wasn't a real VIN? Any advice would be great, thanks a lot!

My guess would be DMV screwed up.
Here in California I can go to DMV's website and look the vin up.
If the vehicle is off the records it will be a surefire way of finding out if the vehicle is really registered or not.
Does your licence plate number match any of the numbers on the title? Or match any in the vin number?
What I mean is did they goof and put your plate number as part of the vin number?

You say that the data code information on the driver's door warranty plate matches the configuration of your truck. That's good. Have you checked the VIN located on the top side of the passenger side frame rail (about 40 inches back from the front end) against the VIN on the warranty plate? If those two match each other you're on pretty safe ground when telling your local Texas DMV office you think they made a mistake on the title and registration. If they don't match, that would be an additional headache. Either way, the number on your registration does not equal anything Ford would have issued. Good luck. Attached is a picture of approximately where you'll find the VIN on the passenger side frame rail. I'm sorry it's pretty hard to see, but you can see it if you make the picture bigger.

Thanks for the help guys. I did a lot of sanding and scrubbing on the frame earlier and found the VIN, which did in fact match the VIN on the door. Neither of which are anywhere near the "VIN" on the title and registration. Still have no idea how they came up with that number. The address on the title and registration do match the family's that I purchased the truck from.

You could be the proud new owner of a Ford Mclaren!
Hope all works out for you.

So I went to the tax office today to see if I could get things straightened out. The weird, shorter VIN on the title came up with all of the correct information, but the actual VIN on the truck they had no record of anywhere in their system. They said if i wanted it to match the vehicle I would have to get a bonded title for it. What a hassle.

F10 = F100 2WD
J = 240 1V I-6.
L = Michigan Truck Assembly Plant.
649174 = 1965, assembled February 1965.
A truck sold new in TX would not have been assembled in MI, would have been assembled in Dallas or Kansas City MO
