Cigar lighter to power port conversion

Has anyone converted their cigar lighter to a power port for charging phones and such? I saw a port at the zone but package listed not to be used to replace cigarette lighter. Any ideas?

I think they just meant people shouldn't buy it if they want to keep the lighter feature. There are no fingers in a power point to hold the lighter in there to heat up. If you don't smoke, you can put the power point in.

The PO of my '70 converted it. The OEM port and cigarette lighter are in the glove box. I'm not sure what brand it is but it has a convenient rubber cover to protect it when not in use.

I like mine having the lighter. I keep it there so it looks like it should. The lighter part doesn't work and I would like to find a replacement eventually. I use it as a power port when I need to charge things but return the lighter after.

Didn't think about putting the port in the glove box that's a good one. I need to replace the glove box insert anyway because when I attempted to remove it it fell apart from water damage. I thought about making one from a lightweight metal but the old school paper ones are pretty cheap.

I added two on the dash,

GPS and cellphone are on the new ones.

The cigar lighter powers my C-4.

I screwed some under the dash. My lighter was gone anyway so it was real easy to tap into the circuit. I power my CB off of it too.

anyone know what kind of amp rating the stock cigar lighter circuit is rated for? wondering what all can run off of it without overloading it. something good to know while on the trails incase any power is needed if your in a bind.

Doing the 3G alternator upgrade works wonders also.

thanks 351, i haven't done a 3g swap yet as my engine plans keep changing. but i'm planning on one with my 460 in my 66 f250 but my 71 f250 shouldn't have any trouble running tools or other stuff on a power port with a 12v diesel alternator supplying the juice

The owner's manual for my 88 E-150 shows 20A.

Lemme clarify.. the PO disconnected the OEM port and lighter and baggied it. It was stored in the glove box for safekeeping.
