I know what you are going through. Yeah, that happens. I really wanted a diesel when I got mine.
I'm not trying to tell you not to do it, but that's just a LOT of miles to spend that kind of money on. If you don't need it, the Expedition EL or suburban 1500 will probably get similar gas mileage to the diesel Excursion.

Either way, I'd strongly recommend you taking a look at both and comparing apples to oranges. Why? Becuase there's nothing like buyers remorse....
When I bought my 2005 Excursion, it was between:
-A newer 6.2 Super Duty (used)
-An Ecoboost or 5.0 F150
-A 2005 6.0 Excursion
The super duty and F150 lost out because I couldn't think of a reason to own a truck other than: "Hey, I just became more Texan becuase I got a truck!"
Both also lost out becuase I was spoiled by the impressive range of the Excursion. Yeah, it costs alot to fill up, but when I get 700-800 miles before empty and fill up once every week and a half to two weeks, it's worth it.
They also lost out because a truck didn't have the scalability I didn't need, but wanted. IF I need to haul anything, I have plenty of room that won't be exposed to the elements. Also suppose I met a chick who made a very convincing case and I decide to get married and start a family. You can't seperate kids in a truck by a whole row of seating and you also don't have enough room for their stuff and the wife's stuff. Keep in mind, that all has yet to happen, but I'm prepared.
Lastly, I was partial to the 6.0, because of....well reasons and it's awesomeness.
Long and short of it, you see which truck won out and why.
Drive them both, have the wife and kids ride along, and see which one is a little more practical for you and the family.
