2005 6.0L bulletproof used buying tips?

I posted this in the X forum too.

I have a line on a 2005 X with what is claimed to be a full bulletproof kit. It is a limited 4x4 with 180k. Asking price $20,000.

Is that a fair price? Seems to be to me, but I feel like I may be missing something.

Can you see the oil cooler modification or the EGR modification?

It has a tuner, new turbo, FICM as well as the bulletproof kit.

What should I look for?

Seems a little steep for real. What do they classify as bullet proof?? Head studs? What kind? Oem headgaskets and oil cooler or victor reinze or dorman. You want arp or h11 headstuds, oem headgaskets and oil cooler. What kind of egr delete? How long ago did they do the work? Did they check the heads as in for flatness or cracks? Any paperwork for the work done?

Also probably want to take it for a drive with a scangaugeII or similar obdII device of your choosing and check the eot and ect temps as well as the ficm and charging system health. Price does sound a little high.

I agree w/ Eric - too steep. If the injectors are still the originals, they would probably be a big expense in the near future.

No matter what they've done to it, 20 grand with that mileage is still on the high side. Remember there's more to the truck than just an engine. The rest of it also has a 180,000 miles on it.

i agree with the others 20k for an 05 trk seems alittle high.. everybody knows when you do stuff to your truck you can not and will not re-cop the money spent on those things.. its a known thing..

i would find out what his defition of bullet proof is. does it have the bullet proof egr and oil cooler kit on it?
if it does and it cost him say 3k-4k to install that kit doesnt mean he can get that much more for his truck. i installed that kit on my truck bc i planned on keeping it no other reason beside that..

I would agree with everybody's assessment, with one caveat..
to a person that NEEDS an Excursion in GREAT shape with a "bulletproof" 6L they ARE more rare than "just" a F250/F350 of same year/mileage.

If it's a BPD Bulletproof job it'll be worth more also..

What is the deal with the transmissions on these things? It seems a lot of the ones I are on their second transmission. Is that also a item I should be scared of.

That's highly unusual....The transmission behind the 6.0 is one of the most reliable things on the truck.....UNLESS.....The truck had one of the tuners on it that eat transmissions. (and I'll bet that was the case, and I would run from that truck)

I'm with Money -- Bully Dog comes to mind. Even transmissions that have been under-maintained seem to go a long ways. One thing I'd be considering: a lot of folks that bullet-proof do it either 1) after they pumped up the motor with a tuner and it failed, or 2) BP planning to run some heavy tunes. Sure there are stock 6.0s that fail as well. But there are a whole heck of a lot of folks in list 1 and 2...

my $.02...

You should be able to find a truck with the mods you want and closer to 100K for that money or less. And I mean studs, oil cooler, EGR delete, and .......

Really

SCT is a good tuner.....It's actually the "tune" itself that is loaded on the SCT that can be the issue. Find out what tune was on it when the trans failed, and what tune is on it now.

Another thing that some will disagree with....many people mod a motor to put out XXX horsepower....then forget about everything behind the motor that is receiving all this extra HP....trans, u-joints, driveshafts, etc. (I have no idea if this is the case with this particular truck, but I've seen it many times in drag cars.)

Yes, Bully Dog is one of the worst.

If it was me....I'd find a stock truck and build it as you want, then you know it was done right....or wrong...in which case... that'll be on you!

I found this truck. What do you all think? Should I jump on it. The problem I have is the dealer appears dishonest. In the Craigslist ad he says 20K in upgrades, and in this ad he says 10K. I suspect it is closer to 5K.

For some reason I cannot get a linked to work. But the vehicle appears totally stock on the outside. This is what is said about it:

2004 Ford Excursion limited, 167k highway miles, 5 speed automatic TorqShift transmission, 6.0L V8 Powerstroke Diesel producing, 325 horsepower and 560 lb of torque, 4x4, 2 owner, no accidents and of course a clean title. Equipped with the following 4Wd with Low Range Mode Rear Entertainment Center DVD Player with Bluetooth Headsets Power and heated mirrors Power windows Power door locks Power heated front seats Power adjustable pedals Remote key-less entry Front and rear heating/ac Backup parking sensors Trip computer Cruise control Factory running boards Tow Package Fog lights Rear window power vents The previous owner has performed 10k in upgrades to the engine of this truck, everything has been to this 6.0L International engine to to make it a bullet proof engine and eliminate all the problems these engines have. The truck has the following upgrades * Ford remanufactured engine with 2 year unlimited mile warranty. * Bulletproof External oil cooler which moves the oil filter by the front bumper. * ARP Head Stud Kit * Bulletproof EGR Cooler * Bulletproof Water Pump The truck is in excellent condition and has been inspected. We performed a full oil change of the transmission and engine, changed all 4 ball joints and performed a front end alignment, changed the front brakes and replaced both batteries. The truck is ready to go anywhere, it does not have any leaks, does not smoke or have any engine blow by. We are selling this truck for $17,800.
